Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Berkow announced Tuesday he would be resigning his post, effective Oct. 10.

“Leaving is very difficult. I love this job, I love these people and I love this community,” said Berkow in a statement released to the press. “However, I have missed three years of my son’s life, of his soccer games, basketball games and his homework. I cannot afford to miss much more. I owe him more of me.”

Berkow will become President and Chief Operating Officer of Altegrity Security Consulting, a new business unit of Altegrity. The unit will provide services, including training and consulting, to law enforcement agencies and the federal government in the United States and overseas.
