SAVFF films bask in Oscar recognition

The nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, Jan. 23. Many of this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival films, guests and honorees were nominated. Join us for a look back at Film Fest before cinema’s most prestigious evening.

Among the nine Best Picture nominees, five movies premiered to signature screenings at SAVFF, including “Call Me By Your Name” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” earned a Best Picture nod, along with 12 other nominations (including Best Production Design–check out our interview with production designer Paul Austerberry).

“Lady Bird,” written and directed by Greta Gerwig, also collected a Best Picture nomination, following its Golden Globe win in the same category.

“Darkest Hour” received a Best Picture nomination, and a Best Actor in a Leading Role nom for star Gary Oldman, who won the award at the Golden Globes earlier this month. Read our review of “Darkest Hour” and cast your votes on whether or not Oldman will take home his first Oscar, too.

Richard Jenkins earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Giles in “The Shape of Water.” On the SAVFF red carpet, he talked with District about his experiences working with del Toro.

Director and writer of Netflix’s “Mudbound,” Dee Rees, was nominated for her adapted screenplay. Learn more about how she balanced her two roles in our red carpet interview.

Visual Effects Supervisor, Joe Letteri received a nomination for Best Visual Effects, along with his team, for his work on “War for the Planet of the Apes.” This is Letteri’s tenth Oscar nomination; learn more about his career in our audio interview with Letteri and his “Apes” coworkers, Production Designer James Chinlund and movement choreographer and actor Terry Notary.

Though not a SCAD Savannah Film Festival selection, Best Animated Feature nominee “Loving Vincent” did have it’s southeast premiere here in Savannah at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts last October. Check out our review of the film.
