SCAD alumnus Abel Macias exhibits All At Once In Every Place

Abel Macias is a SCAD alumnus who has done quite well for himself since his graduation. In 2002, Macias graduated with a B.F.A in Illustration.

Since then he has been commissioned to work with clients like Warner Brothers, Sony Music, Macy’s and Dr. Martens Footwear, among others. Macias’s work has been exhibited in New York; Aarhus, Denmark; Miami, Florida; Provincetown, Massachusetts and Savannah, Georgia.

Currently, he lives in Los Angeles. Macias came back to SCAD for the Sand Beach Art Festival, where he created a piece in honor of the event. He also served on the panel of judges.

While Macias visited SCAD, his exhibit “All At Once In Every Place” was being presented in the SCAD Museum Art Gallery. The exhibit will run through August 5.

“I was very inspired by everything I see, like the mountains or the desert or the ocean or the sunsets that are pretty amazing,” Macias said referring to his time in the Southwestern United States. Another element in Macias’s perspective was the overconsumption and waste he witnessed while he lived in NYC.

“All At Once In Every Place” features paintings, installations and found-object sculptures. The sculptures were made from discarded materials that he bought or collected during his time in New York. The paintings in the exhibit are based on his reflection on what a portal is. Macias uses bright colors and tactile surfaces to capture the imagination and pull viewers into a different world.

“The idea of a portal for me is something that can take you to a memory. It can be a smell, it can be a literal place or an idea. I sort of wanted to make a visual of what that would look like,” Macias explained.
