On Saturday, September 9, SCAD announced a revised move-in schedule for new and returning students. For both SCAD Savannah and Atlanta campuses, new freshman students will move in Saturday, September 16 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. An email sent to all students stated further instructions and move-in time details for each dorm will be sent in an upcoming message.
New transfer and graduate students, as well as returning students, may move in beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday, September 17. Fall quarter classes have been rescheduled to begin on Monday, September 18.
As of Saturday evening, the National Weather Service predicted Hurricane Irma’s most likely arrival time for the state of Georgia to be Monday morning, September 11. The Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) also issued a statement Saturday evening that a hurricane watch remains in effect for Chatham County. Also in effect for Chatham county are a flash flood watch, a storm surge warning and a tropical storm warning.
CEMA reported that over 2,500 people evacuated with the help of the Evacuation Assembly Area (EAA). Anyone in Savannah still wishing to evacuate will be able to do so Sunday, September 10 starting at 8 a.m.
The Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport announced all commercial air carrier operations had ceased in anticipation of Hurricane Irma’s arrival. The Talmadge Memorial Bridge will close Sunday at noon. City emergency services will be suspended if winds sustain an average speed of 39 MPH and will resume when weather permits
Students who relocated to Atlanta have been offered a weekend’s worth of special SCAD tours and workshops. On Saturday, students visited Zoo Atlanta and attended an Atlanta Braves baseball game. A visit to Six Flags Over Georgia is scheduled for Sunday as is a pool party at the Spring House pool. Faculty and students will even collaborate on a large-scale drawing for a 72-hour period during “Storm Surge: Creating the World Inside Irma.” The full list of events can be viewed at scad.edu.
