The Savannah College of Art and Design recently purchased the WXIA building in Midtown Atlanta. The building was originally built in 1950 and served as the local NBC affiliate. It contains 60,000 square feet of space, with over two dozen classrooms, a multi-story green screen room, HD studios and control room, as well as a sound design space, game studies area, and an alternative methods lab. The building will house several departments: animation; broadcast design and motion graphics; interactive design and game development; visual effects; and the new television producing major coming in fall 2009.
In a statement released to the press, Peter Weishar, dean of the School of Film and Digital Media said, “SCAD’s new digital media center in Atlanta provides state-of-the-art support for the curriculum and an ideal physical environment or the university’s growth and exploration into digital media. This new space ensures that SCAD remains among the elite programs in the nation in preparing students to work professionally immediately after graduation.”
