SCAD adds changes to commencement weekend festivities

SCAD will not host the usual New Alumni Concert in Forsyth Park this year. The university stated that it will celebrate its new alumni with a special event at the Alex Townsend Memorial Courtyard at the SCAD Museum of Art with a performance by the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 2. This outdoor concert is free and open to the public and includes the addition of a cash bar.

The event will be held in conjunction with two other commencement events, including a reception for the exhibition “Character Study” by Kelly Boehmer and Summer Wheat (M.F.A., painting, 2005) at the Gutstein Gallery and a screening of Disney’s latest adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. “Character Study” will be on view through Sunday, July 2, 2017.

SCAD advises that for the safety and enjoyment of the guests in attendance, coolers, chairs, large bags, outside alcohol, or food will not be permitted at the concert event. Attendees are subject to a security screening, and firearms are prohibited. SCAD reserves the right to refuse items which may cause a disruption to the event or other patrons, the university stated.

SCAD Dean of Students David Blake released a statement concerning the new additions to the graduation weekend.
“Ultimately, SCAD is always rethinking and re-imagining programs and events,” Blake said. “While there are some changes, this will continue to be an event to celebrate new alumni and their families, and a community event. This year there will be a greater diversity in the type of events. Further, security is always a concern for this event. Moving the new alumni concert to the museum provides a safe and intimate experience for students and community members, and allows SCAD to open up the museum to the community.”
