In an effort to coordinate the cultural and temporal differences among SCAD’s international campuses, all locations will begin the 2010-11 academic year quarters on the same day, and spring break will be extended from one to two weeks to accommodate the Chinese New Year.
The Chinese New Year is celebrated in Hong Kong during Winter Quarter, which will begin January 5, 2011, pushing that campus’ last day one week later that the Savannah and Atlanta schools. To ensure that the Spring Quarter begins simultaneously on March 28, the U.S. campuses will start a week later than in the past and will end on June 2.
Students expressed mixed reactions to this news.
“I like it,” said third-year furniture design major Johnny Jaroslawski of Dothan, Ala. “It depends on if you’re graduating after that or not. I think everyone needs a break. The longer the better.”
First-year film student Andrew Derwin from Litchfield, Conn., disagreed. “Because we’re getting out later than other schools, it limits the chances of landing internships and jobs.”
