SCAD Jam is an up-and-coming club available to any student with an interest in music! Their goal is to create a “family tree” of student musicians and societies for various styles of music. This starts with SCAD Jazz – their first branching club and band. While SCAD Classical is currently in development, here is what you need to know about getting involved with the Jazz branch.
On Friday, October 11, I attended SCAD Jazz’s rehearsal session. I was greeted with their question of the day and thenimmediately followed them into the captivating world of Jazz. The music never stopped. For two hours, the basement of Crites was as loud as it could be and radiating musical passion. This group of artists practiced two pieces, “Sophisticated Ladies” and “Watermelon Man.” These student musicians gave each other feedback and encouragement while creating a lovely community bond.
If you are interested in joining SCAD Jazz, this is what some current members have to say!
What would you like people to know about your club?
“We do not care what experience you have or what skill level you are at. We do not do auditions. Everyone is welcome at SCAD Jazz, as well as any instrument. You are welcome to join us as an instrumentalist at any time. If you would like to just come in and listen, then that is great too!”
How should students prepare if they are interested in joining?
“If you have an instrument, please bring it. If you do not there are still options for you. We have a communal piano, communal drum set, and rentals are also an option. We will work with you and find a place for you to fit in.”
Why SCAD Jam and SCAD Jazz?
“It is great to get to know other musicians and make friends from other majors. We do try to sound good, but it really is all just for fun!”
“We want to play music. We will find a way to play music.”
What goals do you have as a group?
“Currently, we host an open mic at the end of each quarter. SCAD Jazz opens the night with a performance. We would love to get opportunities to play at festivals and events, such as the SCAD Bee Sharps.”
