On Feb. 5, the SCAD Museum of Art will present an exhibit celebrating the legacy of the late American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta. The exhibit is curated by SCAD board of trustees member André Leon Talley as a tribute to de la Renta’s contribution to fashion.
De la Renta is known in the fashion world to be a designer who epitomized timeless elegance in both his designs and his person.
“His catalogue of work showcases his respect for women at all ages and at all stages of their careers,” said Michael Fink, the dean of the SCAD school of fashion. “His clothes become a gorgeous accessory to the confidence and power that women command.”
According to Women’s Wear Daily, there will be dresses from the personal collection of de la Renta’s wife, Annette, who was his greatest muse. There will also be dresses worn by Laura Bush and Taylor Swift, among other legendary women who de la Renta dressed.
“Fashion is a window to what is going on in the world, politically and socially,” said Fink. “From running a household to running a company, his work gives us a history of how women have dressed over the years.”
Regardless of major, students from all fields are encouraged to view the designer’s work.
“Look for the shock of color combinations, the minute details, the handicraft, the art of sewing technique and the use of luxurious materials. Look for the ruffle!” said Fink.
The exhibit opens with a reception and preview on Wednesday Feb. 4. Tickets for the reception are $1000. Tickets for the preview are $150. They can be purchased via the SCAD museum website.
