The SCAD Museum of Art will break ground this fall on a 90,000 square foot expansion to the exhibition space.
The 227 Martin Luther King Blvd location will be taking over the old railroad station that extends down Turner Street. The old passenger building has been demolished the past two years. The bricks are going to be reused in the new construction.
The new branch of the museum will house a donated collection from Dr. Walter Evans, consisting of $10 million worth of African-American artwork.
The collection will remain permanently displayed as a center for African-American studies.
SCAD has started hosting fundraisers in order begin construction on time in fall 2009.
