Residence Life plans ‘Spring Flings’
On May 20, residence life staff at Colony and Dance at the Hive will be hosting their first ever spring homecoming called “Spring Flings,” in the Boundary Village Common Room.
This large scale program, created under the supervision of Residence Director Kerri Van Reeth and Community Assistant Natasha Moore-Silverman, is designed to give students a way to escape from the stress of finals. As the name implies, the theme is the spring, which promises an abundance of blooming flowers at the event.
The event will have a wide variety of food and drinks, including cupcakes from Gigi’s Cupcakes. In addition to dancing to music, provided by SCAD Radio, and socializing, students can also engage in other activities such as taking photos in a selfie booth.
Beyond the opportunity to relax and have fun with friends, “Spring Flings” is designed to also serve as a way to inform students about sexual assault and STI prevention. Through this program, the staff hopes to educate their residents concerning these issues. “They take that knowledge with them wherever they go,” says Rex Riley, one of the residence assistants in charge of the set up. The local Rape Crisis Center will be present to connect students with community resources.
In order to gauge student’s knowledge of these issues, a survey will be presented to them upon entering the common room. By completing this survey, students will be entered into a raffle to become this year’s “Spring Royals” and receive a unique prize.
This year’s “Spring Flings” gives students a much needed chance to dress up and dance their stress away. Riley said, “We want to give the students one night to focus on fun and relaxation, as well as give them a chance to end their year here at SCAD with joyful memories to carry with them throughout their summer.”
The event, which is free for all SCAD ID holders, will take place between 8 – 10 p.m. in the Boundary Village Common Room.
