Students were buzzing this morning and not because they caught a glimpse of the Magic Mike XXL cast currently filming in Savannah.
The Savannah Box Office has just released the lineup for the annual and highly anticipated Savannah Film Festival, which will be held from Oct. 25 to Nov. 1, 2014. SCAD students can get their tickets at the Savannah Box Office if they present their student ID cards.
Among the impressive list of films is “The Imitation Game” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, as well as “Whiplash” with Miles Teller, who was a guest of last year’s festival.
Channing Tatum and Matt Bomer, both of whom are in town filming the sequel to “Magic Mike,” also have films premiering this month. Tatum stars in “Foxcatcher,” a movie based on the true story of the Olympic-winning Schutlz brothers, while Bomer appears alongside Mark Ruffalo and Jim Parsons in “The Normal Heart,” which recently won two Emmy Awards.
After film screenings at the festival, it’s common for directors, producers and even animators to appear and answer questions from the audience. This year, former SCAD alumni Zach Parrish and Nathan Engelhardt will have a Q&A after the screening of “Big Hero 6.” Alison Owen, the executive producer of the “The Giver,” will also be on hand to answer questions about her latest film.
Horror films such as “Horns,” “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” and “Good Samaritan” will also be featured in the spirit of Halloween.
The Savannah Film Festival reaches out not only to SCAD’s film majors, but also to writing and animation students. Aside from attending the highly anticipated premiers of all these films, these students will be able to learn more about the film industry through a series of master classes, lectures and panel discussions with executives from Adobe Sessions, Crowdfunding and From Script to Screen.
If that isn’t enough, students may also partake in the festival itself. There is a competition screening, which will feature student as well as professional work. The student entries range from documentaries to short films to animations. Out of the 85 submissions, 55 films were chosen to screen this year. Winners will receive $80,000 in cash and prizes.
The student films will be shown at the Lucas Theater on Oct. 27. This year’s list includes “A Toast to Our Youth,” “Lambing Season,” “SouthSouthWest,” “Snow Boat,” “Sweet Corn,” “The Gravedigger’s Tale,” “The Storyteller,” “Bull,” “H7N3,” “AM800,” “Little Shadow,” “The Pinewood Man,” “Smiorgh,” and “Thunderstruck.”
Another special screening for student films made in Lacoste will be held at the SCAD Museum of Art on Wednesday, Oct. 28
Students are also encouraged to enter the Bumper Contest. The bumper is a 30-45 second vignette that introduces the Savannah Film Festival. The theme for this year’s contest is “find your character.” Officials are accepting submissions now through Oct. 15. The winners will see their work screened before different films at the festival, as well as receive a gold pass to premiers.
