The 2017 SCAD Savannah Film Festival screened this year’s first showing of animated shorts on Monday, Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts. Among eight total films, three stood out – “Lion Dance,” “Poles Apart” and “Post No Bills” – for using the storytelling power of animation to take their audience on a truly emotional journey.
“Lion Dance”
A Chinese lion dancer and a tourist cross paths during a parade and it is love at first sight. Though the show must go on. The film, written by Zheng Kong and Timothy John Pattinson, uses no spoken dialogue, but is a well rendered 3D animation with has a warm color scheme that may even warm your heart. It was thrilling to watch the lion dancer search the crowds to find his love again.
“Poles Apart”
Nanuk, a polar bear, and Aklak, a grizzly, must do what it takes to survive in the cold artic. This stop-motion animation reveals the progression of this unlikely relationship as the two discover how close their journey has brought them. Aklak comes packing with comedic humor and a backpack full of human necessities, but will he be able to become Nanuk’s first friend in this polar abyss?
