Men’s baseball
The SCAD baseball team kicked off April with a loss to Warner University on April 3, in Lake Wales, Fla.
The following day the two teams faced off in a double header, which saw the Bees shut out the Royals 10-0 in the first game.
Third-year Visual communications major Stephen Shackleford had a solid outing, giving up five hits and striking out six. Fourth-year film and television major Mark Stewart Jr. and third-year broadcasting design major Mike Hines each doubled in two runs while second-year Shane Yoder, a film and television major, also contributed two RBIs.
The Bees dropped game two with a score of 5-1. The Bees played an exhibition game against the Savannah Sand Gnats April 7 at Grayson Stadium. The Sand Gnats won 4-0.
The team lost to Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University on April 9, at Silwa Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Bees took a first inning 1-0 lead on second-year Matt Zajac’s sacrifice fly. But it wasn’t enough as the Eagles banged out 17 hits and defeated the Bees 9-1 in the Sun Conference matchup.
The following day ERU swept the Bees in a doubleheader winning 4-2 and 8-0. In game one the Eagles scored three runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 victory. In game two, Eagles pitcher Austin Quinn tossed a seven-hit complete-game shutout for the win. The Bees slipped to 23-20 and 9-9 in TSC.
On April 13, the Bees faced Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C. where they snapped a five game losing streak. SCAD took a 1–0 lead in the first on a ground out by third-year Mike Hines. An inning later, the Bees exploded for five runs piecing together three hits and two Tiger errors. Film and television major Shane Yoder, a second-year from Gap, Pa., and third-year Patrick Braswell, a graphic design major from Jacksonville, Fla., each had back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Bees closed out the game with three runs in the eighth including a Mark Stewart Jr.’s two-run homer.
First-year Bennie Sanchez pitched five innings in relief to earn the win for the Bees.
Women’s softball
Third base player Courtney Mienkina was named the Sun Conference “Softball Player of the Week” for the week ending March 28. Mienkina, a third-year illustration major, hit her team-leading sixth home run, drove in three runs and batted .857 for the week.
The women’s softball team traveled to Jacksonville, Fla. April 4 and 5, where they swept Edward Waters College in a three game series at GardnerNip Sims Park.
The Bees routed the Tigers 21-1. Fourth-year advertising design major Kristen Curette, from Baytown, Tex., tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine for the win.
On Tuesday the lady Bees swept both games, shutting out EWC 13-0 and 19-0. Third-year Jackie Rooney, a graphic design major and Cowan Heights, Cal. native, and second-year Jessaca Spears, a film and television major from Sugar Land, Texas, each scored five runs over both games.
On April 9, SCAD shut out Northwood (Fla.) University 10-0 in a TSN matchup at Alumni Field in West Palm Beach, Fla. The lady Bees erupted for seven runs in the third inning against Northwood starter Judy Godfrey as the Bees sent 10 batters to the plate.
Fourth-year Kristen Curette, an advertising design major from Baytown, Texas, drove in three runs and recorded 10 strikeouts. Jessaca Spears, also recorded three RBIs including a three-run homer.
The following day the lady Bees and lady Seahawks split a doubleheader. In the third inning of game one, architecture major Carleigh Shannon, a fourth-year from Jacksonville Fla., drove in the first run on a triple and later scored on third-year Jackie Rooney’s grounder.
The Bees made it 5-0 an inning later as fourth-year Kasey Keown, a photography major from Newnan, Ga., drove in a run with a single and Shannon knocked in two more with a single of her own. Courtney Mienkina,, led off the fifth with a home run and Jessaca Spears added a sacrifice fly to give the Bees a 7-0 lead. SCAD won the game 7-1.
Kristen Curette earned the win and improved to 7-0 as she recorded four strikeouts.
The lady Seahawks took game two 5-2.
The 15th-ranked lady Bees improved to 28-10 overall and to 5-1 in TSC. SCAD returns to action Friday, April 16 with a 6 p.m. conference game against Warner University at the Paulson Softball Complex. The two teams will be again the following day in a doubleheader.
Golf
On March 29 and 30 the women’s golf team participated in the SCAD Spring Invitational at the Wilmington Island Yacht Club. The fifth-ranked Bees tied for third place with sixth-ranked Northwood (Fla.) University. Second-year Nikki Stewart, a fashion major from Aliso Viejo, Cal., claimed her second medalist honor this season defeating University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Kaitlin O’Sullivan in a second-hole playoff.
Graphic design major and Guatemala City, Guatemala native, fourth-year Katina Ruest also finished in the top 10 posting a 79 to finish in a tie for eighth place at 158. The 15th ranked USCB women’s team won the 36-hole tournament at 632.
The men’s golf team finished second place in the 39th annual Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Golf Championship on March 28, in Camp LeJeune, N.C. The Bees fell three strokes short of the university’s record, shooting a three over par 291 in the final round of the 54-hole tournament at Gold Course at the Paradise Golf Club. Third-year graphic design major and Ocean Grove, Australia native, Loren Bunting, shot a 74 (+2), one stroke shy of his own university record, to finish in second place overall. Fourth-year Mika Becktor, a industrial design major from Dosjebro, Sweden, finished in third place at 210 (-4).
The men’s and women’s golf teams will participate in The Sun Conference Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. on April 19 and 20.
Lacrosse
On April 2 the women’s lacrosse team annihilated Georgia Southern University 24-1 at the SCAD Athletics Complex. Eight different players scored goals for the Bees. First-year Devin Dorsey, of Davidsonville, Md., scored five of her six goals in the first half. Second-year Jaclyn Scott contributed five goals and fourth-year industrial design major Nicky Mula, of Canton, Mass., had four. Leah Pluger, a fourth-year architecture major from Waynesboro, Va., also contributed three goals.
The following day the lady Bees added another home win defeating Tennessee Wesleyan 19-4. Leading 6-2 at the half the Bees rattled off 12 unanswered second half goals. Dorsey and first-year Kim Caltagirone, an accessory design major from Wayne, N.C., each scored three goals.
Converse College defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design in a women’s lacrosse match on April 10 in Spartanburg, S.C.
The lady Valkyries, which led 10-3 at the half, pushed their lead to 16-4 with 18:16 to play. The lady Bees rallied to score seven goals but came up short as Converse took the match 18-11.
First-year Devin Dorsey led the Bees with four goals and an assist. Fourth-yearNicky Mula, an animation major from Canton, Mass., Alexis Spaide, a first-year from Ellicott City, Md. and second-year Chelsea Bernardo, an interior design major from Dublin, Ohio, each scored twice.
Lauren Alexander, a second-year animation major from Buford, Ga., had eight saves in goal while fourth-year Khylen Steward, a film and television major from Lilburn, Ga., had seven.
The lady Bees ended their 2010 season with a 9-2 record. The nine wins for the Bees established a new victory total for the young program, surpassing the six wins in 2009.
On April 3, the men’s lacrosse team extended its winning streak to eight matches, defeating 16th-ranked Kennesaw University 9-6 in a battle of nationally ranked teams at the SCAD Athletics Complex. Second-year Wade Winebrenner, a graphic design major from Flemington, N.J., recorded 20 saves and graphic design major Trey McKay, a second-year from Houston, Texas, recorded three goals in the team win.
On April 9, the men’s lacrosse team beat Georgia Southern University 11-6 at the SCAD Athletics Complex. In the opening minutes of the second half the Eagles scored giving Georgia Southern a 6-5 lead with 12:27 left in the third quarter.
Less than a minute later SCAD second-year Justin Sicard, a photography major from Marietta, Ga., tied the match at 6 points a piece. SCAD sophomore Shelton Polka, a film and television major from Howe, Texas, scored back-to-back goals to give the Bees the lead for good. SCAD scored six unanswered goals in the second half.
Goalie Wade Winebrenner, a second-year graphic design major from Flemington, N.J., recorded 11 saves.
The following day the men’s lacrosse team ended the regular season with a 22-7 victory over Wofford College at the SCAD Athletics Complex. Shelton Polka led the scoring parade for the Bees with eight goals while second-year Trey McKay, a graphic design major from Houston, Texas, and Jordy McManus, a second-year advertising design major from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., each put three in the net for SCAD.
Fourth-year Derek Superville, an animation major from Columbia, Md., led the defense with nine ground balls and three takeaways while second-year Darren Martin, a photography major from Pasadena, Md., added six ground balls and five takeaways.
The ninth-ranked Bees extended their university-record winning streak to 10 as SCAD improved to 11-3. The Bees will return to action April 23 to compete in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division II Tournament in Duluth, Ga.
Tennis
Georgia College & State University defeated Savannah College of Art and Design 7-2 in a non-conference women’s tennis match April 11 at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility in Milledgeville, Ga.
The 11th-ranked Bees fell to 10-2. SCAD returns to action April 17, when they will host the 2010 The Sun Conference Tournament at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts. SCAD, which are the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will face No. 2 seed Northwood (Fla.) University in a 10 a.m. semifinal match.
Georgia College & State University defeated SCAD 9-0 in a men’s tennis match April 11 at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
Equestrian
The equestrian team participated in the Zone Five Finals on April 10, in Rome, Ga. The team will travel to Sweet Briar, Va. to take part in the ANRC National College Championship on April 17 and 18.
