SCAD sports roundup: February 13
This week in athletics, the school reigned victorious in a number of games and matches across the southeast. Over the weekend District collected the latest SCAD sports scores for this weeks roundup.
Men’s golf:
The men’s golf team traveled to Winter Haven, Fla. this weekend to take part in the Southeastern Fire University Invitational. The event featured eight colleges, six of which are in The Sun Conference.
The Bees found themselves in a tight match at the end of the first round of play with only two strokes behind the lead. The second round of play resulted in all the schools but one, the eventual winner and host, Southeastern, playing to higher scores. The top tier of the leader board was a log jam with any one of five teams vying for the top.
When the final team posted its score, the difference between first and fifth place was a mere eight strokes. The Bees played well, but a final round of 305 gave them possession of fifth place on the leader board.
Fourth-year Dylan O’Leary finished fifth out of 58 golfers participating. He shot a very respectable 147 on the par 72, 6,929 yard Providence Golf Course. First-year Julian Dinsing shot 151, placing 19th.
Women’s tennis:
The women’s tennis team played great matches to roll to an 8-1 win against the College of Coastal Georgia. This was the first of only four home matches for the Lady Bees, and they took advantage of the home court to go to 2-1 on the season.
The reigning national championship doubles team of Maja Plavsic and Theresa Schmaus won their third straight doubles match of the year, but they were not the only doubles victors. Maria Barragan and Daniella Arcila also won their match. Joining them in victors’ row was Carolina Viteri and her partner Andrea Gonzalez to make it a full sweep in doubles play.
In singles play, the Lady Bees nearly had another sweep. Daniella Arcila took her opponent to three sets, but lost a hard fought match 6-3, 3-6, and 3-10 for the Bees only loss of the day. Congratulations to Reinaldo Valor, student assistant Magdalena Bresson and the entire team on their powerful showing against the Mariners of Coastal Georgia.
