SCAD sports roundup: February 2
Men’s swim team:
In the last regular season meet of the 2013 at the Chatham County Aquatic Center, the SCAD Men’s Swim Team defeated Darton College 80-42 and came on to tie Limestone College in the last event 61-61.
Sophomore Mark Shvartsman earned victories in two individual events and one relay: the 200 BF (1:58.19), 100 BF (51:93), and the 200 FR Relay (1:27.17) along with Sean Sloat, Zach Redpath, and Elliott Hutchison.
Ryan Searles did well by capturing two first place finishes in the 100 BR (52.91) and the 200 BK (1:58.15). He also finished second in the 200 Medley Relay (1:36.87) along with Patrick Cardillo, Shvartsman, and Sean Sloat.
Other individual first place finishes were recorded by Sean Sloat in the 100 FR (47:30), Cardillo in the 200 IM (2:00.24), and, swimming in his last regular season event, senior Steven Edgar in the 100 BF (51.77).
The Bees were trailing Limestone the whole meet until the last two events when the men made a strong finish to tie the meet at 61 apiece.
The team will move on to the Blue Mountain Conference Championships in Charlotte, N.C. on February 13-16.
Women’s swim team:
The SCAD Ladies took on Darton College and Limestone College in a dual meet at the Chatham County Aquatic Center and came away with a split. The Lady Bees defeated Darton 97-25 and lost to Limestone in a tight one at 55-67.
All totaled the ladies were able to place first in seven events, second in five events, ant third in six events. First-year swimmer for the Bees, Caroline Lepesant, added three more victories to her growing swimming resume by taking first in the 100 FR (10:25.99), the 500 FR (5:10.25), and the 200 BF (2:11.46). She also added a second place finish by taking part in the 200 FR Relay.
Hannah Legg continued her good work by taking first in the 200 BK (2:08.52) and the 200 IM (2:11.03). She also added a second place finish in the 200 FR Relay.
Other winners in their individual events were Kelsey Bobzien in the 100 BK (1:00.72), and first year swimmer, Emma McKinley in the 100 BF (1:01.00).
The regular season concluded with Saturday’s meet and the team moves on to the BMC Conference Championship in Charlotte, N.C. on February 13-16.
Men’s lacrosse:
The men’s lacrosse team faced a first-year team from Flagler College in an exhibition match today at the SCAD Sports Complex. The results were a lopsided 36-1 victory for the Bees. For those fans that love scoring, the Bees provided a spectacle.
The statistics were very much in SCAD’s favor in every category. The Bees took 66 shots (45 on goal) compared to five (three on goal) for the Saints. SCAD won 27 of the 40 face offs, and had 39 ground balls compared to 10 for the Saints.
Almost everyone on SCAD’s roster was involved in the victory, but no one could match the evening that freshman Mason Threlkeld had. Threlkeld was involved in a third of the 36 points put up on the scoreboard for the Bees. He scored eight goals and assisted on four more scores. Shelton Polka and Doug Henry had productive evenings themselves by contributing five goals and one assist and three goals and three assists, respectively.
Equestrian:
It was a double-header weekend for the SCAD equestrian team. The University of Florida was the host college for the Saturday horse show. Open rider and senior Caroline Ingalls, was first in both her over-fences class and flat class. Congratulations to Ingalls as she ended up tying for high point rider of the show. Michael Kocher was second in his open flat class and fifth over-fences. Devon Walther was first in her intermediate flat, while Kelsey Fey finished second.
In the intermediate over fences class, Kristin Stine was second, and Lindsay Baker was fourth. Stine was also second in her novice flat class. Lauren McGuire was second in her novice over-fences class, and Kelly Difiglia was fifth. Difiglia also finished first in her section of novice flat. Captain, Katherine Cameron won her section of Novice flat. Hannah Friedman was fourth in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter and Tori Smolinski was fifth.
Kayla Myles was fourth in beginner walk/trot/canter. Cecilia Langley won her walk/trot class and Marianna Rodriguez was fourth. The Equestrian Team tied for the Reserve Champion ribbon.
The following day in the open flat class, Kocher was second and Ingalls finished third. Kocher and Ingalls both won their sections of open over-fences. Walther and Fey both won their sections of intermediate flat. Baker continued SCAD’s winning ways by finishing first in intermediate fences and second in her novice flat class. Olivia Dodd placed second in her Novice flat class, while Cameron won her class.
McGuire was fifth in novice over-fences. Smolinski won her advanced walk/trot/canter class, while Johan Faulstich finished fourth in his class. Myles was sixth in beginner walk/trot/canter. Both Cecille Langley and Marianna Rodriguez Whitten won walk/trot classes.
Congratulations go to Mike Kocher for finishing as high-point rider of the show. Lindsay Baker was reserve high-point rider. Overall the Bees were champions. They lead the region with a 41 point total.
Men’s tennis:
The Georgia Gwinnett men’s tennis team defeated SCAD on Friday at the Georgia Gwinnett Tennis Facility in Lawrenceville, Ga., 7-2, capturing their first-ever match in their school’s history. SCAD played in front of 350 fans who packed out the Grizzlies’ home courts and celebrated the beginning of GGC’s first intercollegiate spring sports season with a strong performance against the Bees.
The doubles team of Manatsa Mazimbe and Peter Yellico gave SCAD its only victory in doubles play, while Darnell Sgubin was the lone winner in singles play.
The men return to action February 3 when they travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Shorter College. SCAD’s first home match will be against College of Coastal Georgia at Bacon Park. Match play begins at 1 p.m.
Women’s tennis:
The lady Bees took on Brenau, the preseason ranked third team in the country in Gainseville, Ga. The competition was very fierce throughout the day. Match play did not end until five hours after it started.
SCAD’s no. 1 doubles team of Maja Plavsic and Theresa Schmaus won convincingly, demonstrating why they are the number one doubles team in the NAIA. At SCAD’s no.2 spot Maria Barragan and first-year Daniella Arcila won their match in straight sets.
The overall victory came down to singles play. Schmaus and Arcila played excellent tennis dominating at their respective spots. Needing just one more victory Plavsic, Barragan, and Andrea Gonzalez each lost tough three set matches that were contested to the last point. Oh so close!

The Lady Bees next match will be in Macon, Ga. on February 3. The Bees return home on February 9 to take on the College of Coastal Georgia at Bacon Park at 11 a.m. Come support your Bees!
