Lacrosse
On April 24 Kennesaw State University scored with 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation to upset the SCAD men’s lacrosse team 10-9 in the semifinals of the 2010 Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division II Tournament in Duluth, Ga.
The ninth-ranked Bees, who were the tournament’s No. 1 seed, saw their university-record winning streak snapped at 10 and fell to 11-4.
Seven men’s lacrosse players from SCAD have recently received postseason honors from the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference.
Third-year Dan Comite, an advertising design major from Swampscott, Mass, was named to the All-SELC Division II first team and selected as the SELC Division II Defensive Player of the Year.
Second-year Shelton Polka, a film and television major from Howe, Texas, was named to the All-SELC Division II Tournament team and the All-SELC Division II first team.
Second-year Wade Winebrenner, a graphic design major from Flemington, N.J., was named to the All-SELC Division II first team.
Fourth-year Derek Superville, an animation major from Columbia, Md., was named to the All-SELC Division II second-team.
First-year Cody Hoerauf, a native of Seaford, N.Y., was an honorable mention pick.
First-year Kreyton Polka, a sequential art major from Howe, Texas, was an honorable mention pick.
Second-year Derek Shurson, an advertising design major from Woodbury, Minn., was an honorable mention pick.
Coach Michael Cummings led SCAD to its fifth consecutive appearance in the SELC Tournament in 2010. Cummings led the Bees to their first-ever No. 1 seed in the tournament as SCAD won the SELC Division II South Division in 2010. Cummings was honored as the SELC Division II Coach of the Year.
Men’s Baseball
On April 30, Edward Waters College started a key The Sun Conference baseball series against the SCAD in Jacksonville, Fla.
Edward Waters took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI double against SCAD starter first-year Nick Iuni (7-4), who scattered 12 hits and struck out six in the complete-game effort. The Tigers scored twice in the sixth before breaking it open with four more runs in the eighth to take a 7-0 lead. SCAD scored two in the ninth but it wasn’t enough as Edward Waters won 7-2.
The following day the Bees swept a TSC doubleheader from the Tigers.
In game one the Bees jumped on Tiger starter Matt Geiger for nine runs in the first three innings and never looked back. The Bees scored in every inning of the second game as every starter except one had at least one hit.
Third-year Patrick Braswell, a graphic design major from Jacksonville, Fla., hit his team-leading fifth homer as he drove in four runs in the game one. Third-year Stephen Shackleford, a visual communications major from Louisville, Ky., won his 11th game of the season as he struck out 12 in the 11-6 victory.
In the nightcap, third-year Mike Hines, a broadcast design major from Lithonia, Ga., hit two home runs for the Bees in the sweep while fourth-year Scott Shambaugh, a photography major from Gahanna, Ohio, drove in four runs in a 14-4 win.
Women’s Softball
The SCAD softball team snapped a five-game losing streak as the Bees defeated St. Thomas (Fla.) University 9-1 in a The Sun Conference contest April 30 at the Paulson Softball Complex.
St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead with a home run to center field. In the third, third-year Jackie Rooney, a graphic design major from Cowan Heights, Calif., tied the game at 1 on her infield single. The lady Bees took the lead minutes later as fourth-year Carleigh Shannon, a architecture major from Jacksonville, Fla., scored on a wild pitch. Second-year Jaime Voelkel, a industrial design major from Madison, Ala., followed with a RBI bunt single and fourth-year Dominica Jordan, a film and television major from Mission Viejo, Cal., stroked a two-run double to right to give SCAD a 5-1 lead.
The Bees pushed across three more runs an inning later. Rooney contributed another run-scoring infield single while Voelkel blasted a two-run single through the right side. SCAD closed out the game early as Shannon, connected on a home run to left-center field in the fifth.
The following day the lady Bees swept the Bobcats in a doubleheader. In the first game, SCAD broke the contest open with a five-run second inning. Rooney had an RBI single while fourth-year Kristen Curette, a advertising design major from Baytown, Texas, drove in two with a single up the middle.
SCAD scored twice in the fourth and closed the game out early as Curette singled home a run in the fifth. First-year Sam White, a native of Tucson, Ariz., earned her 11th win of 2010 as she allowed just four hits.
In the nightcap the Bees took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning when third-year Courtney Mienkina, a illustration major from Surrey, British Columbia, doubled to right and Shannon and Rooney drew back-to-back walks. St. Thomas scored a run in the second.
SCAD got the run back in their half of the second on a Shannon single to center. The Bobcats closed to 3-2 as they scored a run in the third on a ground out, but that would be as close as they would get as reliever first-year Kiara Boccia, a native of Escondido Calif., limited the Bobcats to two singles over the final five innings.
