To me, nothing is better than a young female director creating a coming-of-age story. Greta Gerwig made the film “Lady Bird” back in 2017, starring Saoirse Ronan as the titular character. This story explains the struggles of growing up in a private Catholic high school and trying to find individuality. Growing up in a similar situation, I found it hard to express myself. Opportunity for individual expression isn’t an option while wearing uniforms.

“Lady Bird” discusses the struggle of self-image and exploring the uncertainty of romance. Those themes are very fundamental in every young woman’s life, including mine. It’s refreshing to find an accurate depiction of growing up from a woman’s perspective.

I was inspired by stills from the movie while creating these self-portraits. Reliving the awkward memories of high school with a new perspective became the theme for these images. Coming to SCAD gave me the freedom to find who I was in a creative and safe space.
