It looks like the University for Creative Careers is building a new residence hall by Montgomery Hall, where it would house 500 students with a 400-space parking lot and a dining hall by late 2013.
Despite its preference for small class sizes, the school is growing.
“Each year here at SCAD-Savannah there is a waiting list for students who want to live in university provided housing,” Philip Alletto, vice president for Student Success, said. “The proposed residence space to be built adjacent to Montgomery Hall comes in response to student demand.”
The location is convenient because the school already owns the land. While Barnard Hall is close by, the new living quarters would enable more applicants to be admitted here. The proximity to classes at Montgomery and Gulfstream is just an added bonus.
The Montgomery residence hall would also mean increased security in the area.
With a 24-hour security officer plus security cameras and access control, the new residence hall will be similar to other buildings. Security already offers escorts in addition to the usual transportation, so these services would be available at the new hall as well.
As for transportation, the yellow and orange routes would probably service the new hall — but it all depends on which students live there.
“For example, if a majority of the students have majors where the bulk of their classes are in Monty/Gulfstream we wouldn’t have to make too many changes,” Jeffrey Smith, SCAD’s security and transportation manager, said. “However, if a majority of the students have majors in other buildings, we would make significant changes to the system.”
With locations in Atlanta, Lacoste and Hong Kong, the school is continuing to expand even its home campus here in Savannah.
