SCJ series: opinion page talk and free food

Tom Barton, editorial page editor for the Savannah Morning News, will present “The Write Touch: a discussion about the craft of writing feature stories, personal columns and opinion pieces,” at noon Jan. 15 in the first floor conference room of Keys Hall, 516 Abercorn St.

The talk is part of the Eat and Educate series, sponsored by the SCAD Chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ), and will feature Barton’s presentation and free lunch.

The event is open to all SCAD students, faculty and staff. The Eat and Educate series are talks and free food held twice a month. The series seeks to nourish the minds and stomachs of the SCAD community, and focuses on all topics related to media. Speaker bio:
Tom Barton is the editorial page editor of the Savannah Morning News, a position he has held since 1993. He has worked at the newspaper since he graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism in 1978.

His first job was working as the police reporter for the Savannah Evening Press. He then covered city and county governments, followed by the health and medical beats. He was named one of the newspaper’s editorial writers in 1990. He has won numerous awards for reporting, opinion writing and column writing. But what matters the most is the feedback he gets from readers— positive or negative. He is a native of Ohio.
