Silver and Ink exhibition has a golden debut

On Saturday, the photography department opened its most prestigious event, the Silver and Ink exhibition at the Gustein Gallery.

This juried exhibition, which is on its sixth year, features the best of student work in different categories of photography. The opening was held on the same day as the Sidewalk Arts Festival and still managed to attract a large crowd of parents and students becoming quite crowded as onlookers flocked to admire the artwork displayed.Silver and Ink

In spite of the mass of people gathered at the event, many photographers managed to squeeze through the crowd to pose next to their work. Several of their models even joined in. Students proudly pointed out a photograph that their friend had done while they mingled with the photography professors as well. Parents even stopped to use their phones to take pictures of the pieces that they liked.

One parent gushed over Silver and Ink, calling it “gorgeous”. “I’m very impressed with the turnout,” she said. “It’s also amazing how well-grouped the photographs are.”

“I feel like what makes this successful is that there are so many different photographic genres placed in different categories and yet they are all so cohesive,” explained Grace Ann Leadbeater, a third-year photography major, adding that the slow transition from one category to the next helped audiences understand what was going on in the exhibit.

Another parent said that some of photographs were good, and others were not as much. A student did not like the area so much, and said that he preferred the opening at the River Club two years ago because there was more space.

In spite of the mixed responses, more and more viewers gathered at the Gustein Gallery with each passing minute, causing some of the parents and students to admire the photographs from the outside.

The Silver and Ink exhibition runs from April 27 to June 2, 2013.
