Deborah Poynton takes hyper-realism to the next level with her paintings’ monumental size—almost every hair and pore on her subjects’ bodies can be viewed on her canvases. Poynton, a South African native, is debuting her newest paintings for the first time in the United States in Savannah.
Her show, titled “Everything Matters,” is up at the Pei Ling Chan Gallery at 322 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The exhibition will be a part of the Gallery Hop, Feb. 13, 6-10 p.m.
Poynton was born in Durban, South Africa. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to South Africa to paint. Her subject matter in the latest show is a series of large canvases that feature larger-than-life portraits of nude and clothed figures. There are also elements of still life throughout her paintings as well.
The images bring the emotional state of the human condition into the viewer’s face with the sometimes-severe nature of facial expressions and the quite vividly alive, and large eyes making contact with the audience.
Poynton’s “Everything Matters” finishes its term of exhibition at the Pei Ling Chan Gallery after Feb. 13. Her work will show next in Atlanta at the ACA Gallery of SCAD.
