The historic Trustees and Lucas theaters have been pillars for the Savannah community since their construction in 1920 and 1946, respectively. Since SCAD’s acquisition of the spaces, the school has kept them in operation with new releases, holiday screenings and live productions. Their lineup this spring has standout offerings from all three categories for SCAD students to explore.
April 24: Friendship
Trustees Theater’s early-release screening of “Friendship” is free and only open to SCAD cardholders, giving students the chance to catch the critically acclaimed nightmare comedy before its wide release in May. Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson play suburban neighbors discovering the terrifying act of making new friends. The movie officially releases on May 23, so the lucky ones who grab tickets will have to wait a month before spoiling what critics are calling “a nightmare” and “the best comedy of 2025.”
May 2: The Breakfast Club – 40th Anniversary Edition
40 years ago, the world fell in love with five teenagers who grew close over the course of a Saturday detention. The movie became a classic high school story discussing stereotypes, popularity, and what it means to embrace your last few years of childhood. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic film, SCAD is hosting a screening accompanied by a post-show Q&A with Professor Andrew Meyer, who worked as an executive producer on the film. Professor Meyer will also be signing copies of his autobiography in the lobby after his discussion.
May 4: Star Wars: Phantom Menace
“Star Wars” fans are familiar with May the Fourth celebrations, inspired by the iconic line “May the Force be with you” from “Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.” This year, the first episode, “Phantom Menace,” will be screening at the Lucas Theater for the Arts to give the fandom somewhere to congregate. A photo booth, specialty concessions and other fun surprises are promised to the audience during this screening.
May 10: Death of a Unicorn
“Death of a Unicorn” is one of A24’s most recent releases, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd. The father-daughter duo accidentally discovers dark magic while on a weekend retreat with Elliot’s (Paul Rudd) billionaire bosses. It’s scarily effective at blending the horror and comedy genres and worth gathering a group of friends to check out at Trustees Theater on May 10.
May 22-25: The Drowsy Chaperone by SCAD School of Film and Acting
For their spring quarter production, the SCAD School of Film and Acting is presenting “The Drowsy Chaperone.” With a five-time Tony Award Winning book and score, this comedy musical promises 1920s elegance, meta-commentary on musical theater tropes and multiple show-stopping numbers. Support your SCAD classmates who will be a part of the cast and crew at the Lucas Theater for the Arts from May 22 to 25.
