To the Editor,
I would like to thank you for the staff editorial about the new minor in equestrian studies. Myself, along with many other students I am sure, were quite confused after logging on to SCAD’s Web site and seeing a large banner announcing it as a new minor being offered for the fall. As I glanced at the other minors being offered, I said, “Well, these all make sense.” Accessory design makes sense at an art and design school. Equestrian studies, however, I was more confused about. In fact, just about any other kind of minor I can think of would make more sense. What about journalism, since we do have photographers and writers who I’m sure would want to pursue this field? Or maybe the dance and music minors could be enhanced; I’m sure they could use some revamping.
I checked the athletics site to see that the equestrian team is made up of fewer than 20 people, because I thought it seemed odd that 20 people would be enough to start an entirely new minor. I personally do not own a horse, as I am sure many other students here don’t as well, so it would be my assumption that only these students would be taking this minor. Well, if we are trying to offer more of an edge to our athletes, why don’t we have classes in free throwing, or in backstroke techniques for our other athletes? I would understand classes that create more time for the students who spend so much bringing prestige to the school.
