“Autonomy is a human right, and yet people risk their lives to achieve it. It’s international and political, and it’s domestic and personal. Autonomy is self-control. Autonomy is self-governance. Autonomy is self-love,” said Charlotte Beck, creative director of SCAD District, in her introduction for Square 95’s newest issue.

Square 95 is a SCAD student-run magazine based in Savannah, Georgia. This is the third issue of the publication, and the first issue that is creative writing focused and available in physical form. Through nine different pieces varying from poems to short stories to photographs, readers can explore the theme of autonomy alongside dreamy visuals filtered through a black-and-white newspaper color palette.

As college students, we are very familiar with autonomy and the sudden realization that we get to wake up every day and do exactly what we want. There are loads of positives to this, but it’s easy to feel frozen and alone. After all, you’re miles and miles away from your family when you realize you can only rely on yourself. Outside the college world, nations are fighting for their right to stay standing, women are fighting for their right to lead their own lives, and it is important we understand the significance and complexity of autonomy.

Empower yourself through the empowered writers and artists showcased in this issue of Square 95. Pick up a copy at the Oglethorpe House student media center or view it digitally here.

Square 95 submissions come from all types of students with various majors at SCAD. In response, the SCAD District staff selects the pieces, edits them, and puts everything together to create a wonderfully creative and professional-grade magazine. Keep an eye out for Square 95’s next call for submissions on SCAD District’s Instagram.
