Students prepare voters

By Tiffany Cullen

Each candidate, Democratic and Republican, has chosen their running mate and are preparing to face off in the election this November. Voters around the country, young and old, are weighing each candidate’s message of change and reform. At SCAD, as well as thousands of other college campuses around the US, the call for youth involvement is no different. Students are encouraged to gain awareness and participate in the electoral process. Both the Democratic and Republican campus clubs realize the importance of the youth vote. This election may largely be determined by the youth vote and whether or not that vote is cast. Through a variety of local events both student organizations are spreading the word about voter registration and where the candidates stand on the issues.

Each group is now out in force to promote their candidates. Ryan McCardle President of the SCAD Democrats chapter stated overall, “I am quite happy with Barack Obama’s choice in Joe Biden as Vice President. Together it is a perfect match for President/Vice President to go about for the definite change we need in Washington.” Hilary Clinton supporters on campus are not as divided as once thought. Now that Palin has been named McCain’s Vice Presidential pick, Clinton supporters are backing up the Obama/Biden ticket. To promote their cause, the SCAD Democrats are planning different events around campus like fairs, meetings, and picnics. “We are helping them actually get out the vote and what they should look for in the ballot and a candidate,” said McCardle. He added, “If we do this, the Democrats can win Chatham County hands down.” Anyone interested in joining SCAD Democrats can attend one of their meetings at the Student Center on Montgomery Street; join the Facebook group Art School Democrats or visit their booth at the Student Organization Fair Saturday, September 20th, 6-8 p.m.

The SCAD Republicans are also out spreading the word and gathering support for their candidates. Kathryn Clark, the President of SCAD Republicans said, “John McCain has been through a lot, and he has a lot of wisdom to impart to us. As a soldier and POW, he is one of the few Americans that really understands what war means, and I think that will guide his foreign policy decisions. Sarah Palin is a phenomenal choice for VP and has fought tirelessly for reform in Alaska.” SCAD Republicans are working hard to get their message out to the public. On their Facebook Web site, there are several events to choose from for the political novice interested in volunteering and showing support. SCAD Republicans are having a debate watching party October 2nd. “We are trying to be more visible on campus, hosting more events and working with other colleges in the area to bring in better speakers” Clark said of SCAD Republicans future plans. SCAD Republicans will also be in Atlanta for Solution Day September 27th, a tri-partisan conference focusing on energy, economics, health, and education. For anyone interested in joining SCAD Republicans you can email Kathryn Clark at scadrepublican@gmail.com, look up Art School Republicans on Facebook, or visit their booth at the Student Organization Fair.
