Nine SCAD students traveled north to capture video and photos of Monday’s total solar eclipse. Savannah was forecast to have a 97 percent eclipse, but northern locals experienced full totality.
Seeing the mid-day eclipse meant the group had to wake at 3:30 a.m. to stake out the perfect spot at Santee National Wildlife Refuge in Summerton, South Carolina. The decision to travel north was fortuitous, as Savannah’s view of the eclipse was spoiled by heavy cloud cover.
The group claimed one of the refuge’s few lakeview spots. The students brought six cameras, excluding phones, and put them all to good use to observe and record the event.
The eclipse was “pretty epic,” said third-year motion media grad student Matt Van Rys. “It’s a great reminder on how much happens outside our planet.”
