Sulfur Studios provides creative space for artists

District sat down with SCAD fibers alumna Jennifer Moss, the Studios and Exhibitions coordinator at Sulfur Studios, to learn more about the mission of the creative space. Moss, along with two other founders and SCAD alumni, Emily Earl, BFA in photography and Alexis Javier Perez, BFA in fashion, established the gallery to provide 26 private art studios, event/performance spaces, a community darkroom and other services to students, artists, hobbyists and amateurs who lack a place to be creative. Named after one of Savannah’s most familiar smells, Sulfur Studios fosters a vibrant environment for the creative community.
Along with their gallery rental service, Sulfur Studios also hosts juried exhibitions where creatives can submit their artwork for consideration in themed showings. “I see putting together an exhibition an art itself,” Moss said. Artists are able to rent out the gallery space for an entire week to customize their exhibit.
Students who are interested in having a show at Sulfur Studios can reach out by email, info@sulfurstudios.org, with an introduction, three to five examples of artistic work and availability. Located on 2301 Bull St., the business is open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and holds open studios the first Friday of every month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The studio encourages the community to attend events posted on the calendar located on their website.
