Ten From the Top: Things for Valentine’s Day

Ten from the Top is the weekly column of the very honest and often snarky thoughts of District’s editor-in-chief.

Valentine’s a Day to celebrate love. Or to despise the commercialization of affection through expensive cards and flowers. Regardless of what your opinions or your relationship statuses are, it’s time to acknowledge a few things about the holiday. There is a lot of hype. There is a lot of pink. And there are at least a few things you should definitely do this Feb. 14.

1. Buy lots of chocolate… a little late

We all need chocolate, but hold off until the 15 when all of those heart shaped boxes will be irrelevant and just as tasty.

2. Call your mother

I know that even if you despise everyone on the planet chances are your mother gets a pass. How often do you actually tell her, and your entire family for that matter, that you care about her. Pick up the phone and give her a ring. It might even turn into a care package with some more of that chocolate.

3. Make old school valentine’s

You remember those shoeboxes turned mailboxes in elementary school full of cryptic valentine’s with ninja turtles and peanuts? Throwback, right? I bet your friends would think it was just as cute as you would if those made a comeback for the college crowd.

4. Get some flowers

Buy the expensive bouquet or maybe find a bush that looks like it has too many blooms. As long as your allergies will allow keep some pretty and slightly wilted flowers on your desk to brighten up the rest of midterms.

5. Try low key

You can see the restaurants all over downtown hike up menu prices for that “fancy” dinner. Maybe try something a little easier and do a picnic or try a late lunch and replace that fancy dinner for pizza.

6. Kiss somebody

Your significant other, a peck on a friend’s cheek, your cat, even. A little bit of affection goes a long way and what a better day to spread it.

7. Have a serious debate about the holiday

I’m sure this will inevitably happen whether you are pro- or anti-Valentine’s day. Talk with someone with other ideas though and see if it changes your mind or not.

8. Movie marathon

Whether you are in a relationship or not it is completely possible to enjoy every minute of Valentine’s Day without leaving the comfort of your covers. Netflix is always there and the only difference between your significant other or the delivery man bringing food directly to you is that in one case you have to share.

9. Pay it forward

Everyone needs a little loving even if you don’t know them. Maybe offer to help that friend who is stuck on that huge project she has been doing all week or send a piece of cake to that couple in the corner to celebrate the engagement you just watched. It is a special day and having someone or not doesn’t mean a thing in the long run.

10. Get on Tinder

Tinder is, in my opinion, one of the best things you can do with a spare afternoon. It is a huge confidence boost to play God with your love life and to meet new people. Plus, if it materialize into anything, you usually get either a good date or a good story out of it.
