The grand re-opening of Gutstein Gallery

As we all return to the norms of an on-ground campus experience, much of the off-campus resources, events and opportunities available to us feel like they’ve fallen on the back burner. Though a busy schedule might preoccupy a lot of our time, it’s important to remember that SCAD has a lot to offer both on campus and off.

At the beginning of the year, Gutstein Gallery, located on the corner of Jen Library, revealed it’s grand re-opening after it’s closing due to COVID-19 in 2020. With it’s current group exhibition, ‘Free Association,’ on display until March 4, the cultivation of inspired work is now open for viewing from 10-6 p.m. on weekdays, 12-5 p.m. on Saturday, and as always, is free entry for all.

Comprised of a series of work from SCAD alumni, faculty and renowned contemporary artists from the SCAD Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibit revolves around film as a medium. Associate Curator, Ben Tollefson, described it as “a survey of film by the artists without a specific theme, creating an open-ended concept left to the interpretation of the viewer.”

Tollefson expressed his excitement to announce the ‘Open Call for Entries’ for the gallery’s up-and-coming summer exhibition. The ultimate goal of this open call is to support students in their creative endeavors and give them a commercial space to exhibit and sell their work.

On January 31, the theme for this summer, ‘Supernatural,’ launched and is an open call to students, alumni and faculty to partake in from both Savannah and Atlanta campuses. Leaving the theme up to the artist’s discretion, Tollefson looks forward to the flood of depictions exploring the word, resembling anything from ‘spiritual’ to ‘other worldly’ and beyond. If you’re interested in submitting to this exhibition, you can find the ‘Call for Entries’ SCAD page linked at the bottom of the article. While the exhibits at Gutstein are always changing, a constant part of the space is the selling of original student alumni and faculty artwork.

Student staff members, Jo Pinzon and Tara Oglesby, shared their daily operations towards encouraging visitors to take a look at what the gallery has to offer, including showcasing the art and selling pieces. So the next time you’re headed to Broughton or looking for inspiration, immerse yourself at the Gutstein Gallery for a new perspective and perhaps, a new opportunity.
