During the 2017 SCAD Savannah Film Festival District interviewed writer and director of the short film “The View From Up Here,” Marco Calvani and producer Dean Ronalds.

Their short is about two neighbors, Lila, a Syrian refugee who just moved into the apartment and Claire, a local who has lived in the building for years. The film narrates what happens when Claire decides to pay Lila a visit.

Calvani and Ronalds sat down with District to discuss the creation of the narrative, adapting it from a play to a screenplay, the message they wanted to send with the short and their advice to students tackling similar subjects.

Asli Shebe is a senior writing major from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
