The life of a college student tends to be more chaotic than most. Students’ minds are all over the place trying to keep up with assignments, jobs and social lives. Often, food takes the backroad. Whether you’re cooking full meals, enjoying a small snack or sharing a meal with friends, mealtime is the one time a day students can relax and spend however they please. We asked the following students to document their mealtime rituals using disposable cameras. This is “Bees on Film: Food Edition.”

Grace Nguyen

“Food has always been something I prefer to share with friends and family, recently preparing food for those people is something I enjoy and take pride in. After this year, sharing meals and spending time with people has become a time that I don’t take for granted. When you spend time around the same people and you start to have favorite meals in common, it’s kind of comforting. Whether we cook together or share our favorite take out, I’m grateful for the time that meals allow me to spend with the people in my life,” said Grace Nguyen, a junior UX design student.

“I think what these pictures really represent is how we show up for one another. This school year was my first time living off-campus and being responsible for cooking for myself. With this school year also being almost entirely online, we couldn’t help but all feel alone at times — especially when you only cook gluten-free pasta for yourself for dinner every night. It can be easy to forget about the joy of eating. Because of this, my friends and I made it a point to cook meals together often so that we could all eat delicious meals with people we love. Coming together for dinner is what made Savannah feel like home this year, and I owe it all to the beautiful friends I’ve made along the way,” said Gracyn Strachan, a senior illustration student.

“Mealtime has always been one of the most special moments between my friends and family. It’s a great excuse to sit down, talk, laugh and, of course, eat. Cooking with my friends and roommates after a long day has brought us all closer. I am excited for all the future memories around the dinner table!” said Kyla Rys, a junior photography student.

“As a busy student, it’s hard to prioritize mealtime. I usually just eat quick snacks in between my classes. However, when I do get the chance to cook with my roommates and my friends, it makes me happy. It’s my favorite thing to do in my free time,” said Yannick Roos, a senior advertising student.
