The man behind the famous “Can you Say…Hero?” Esquire article walked the red carpet at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival Saturday Nov. 2. Joining two screenwriters from the gala screening, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Tom Junod discussed his relationship with Fred Rogers.
21 years ago, Junod wrote his first profile about someone who became a friend. 10 years later, screenwriters, Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue, transformed the lifelong relationship into a movie starring Tom Hanks.
Junod reminded aspiring journalists that vulnerability between the interviewer and interviewee elevates a story. He encouraged young adults to appreciate the “human” in everyone.
Ultimately, Junod shared that Fred Rogers’ message about kindness holds as much relevance today as it did years ago.
