SCAD fashionistas are preparing for a growing accessories industry. The economic recession is hurting women’s fashion, but is giving roughly a 2 percent bump to smaller purchases which usually don’t have sizes. Dean of Fashion Michael Fink says that since an accessories major is so uncommon, the school has been getting attention from designers.
“We get calls everyday from the industry – we need a head designer, we need an assistant who knows shoes, we need handbag designers, that’s what we’re doing. We’re supplying the next wave of handbag and show designers.”
SCAD has gone from having one accessories professor to five, in the last four years. And accessories enrollment has also risen from 10 students to over 60 during that time.
