Victoria Martin: Team Math Queen opens winter season

56510-Victoria_Martin_SBO_960x238_SCADThe performing arts department opens its winter season February 14 with the comedy “Victoria Martin: Math Team Queen.”

Written by SCAD performing arts and dramatic writing professor Kathryn Walat and directed by professor Mark Tymchyshyn, the play will run February 14-17, in the Mondanaro Theater in Crites Hall.

“Victoria Martin: Math Team Queen” is a comedy about being the smartest girl in the class. Victoria Martin is the third most popular sophomore at Longwood High, who unwittingly finds herself on the high school math team,” Walat said. “In a struggle to decide if her new-found talent and passion for math is worth the possible damage to her social standing, Victoria must decide who she really is and what kind of person she wants to be.”

“Victoria Martin” opened off-Broadway in 2007 and has since been performed across the country.

“More generally, it’s the story of figuring out who you are and how you want to be – a big question in high school, but also one that we come up against again and again in our lives,” Walat said. “I’m thrilled now for the play’s production at SCAD. Our talented and exuberant students are perfect for bringing these characters to life.”

Walat has taught at SCAD since 2010. She has received new play commissions from MCC Theater and Yale Repertory Theatre, and her work has been developed at many well-known facilities, including the Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons, and the National Playwrights Conference – Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center.

Performances are scheduled for February 14-16, at 8 p.m., and February 17 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 with senior, student or military ID. The February 14 performance is free with a valid SCAD ID.
