What’s the Buzz?

By Chantelle Emery

FashionBuzzSketching, sewing and creating garments are the initial thoughts that come to mind when one thinks of fashion. However, if you’re more interested in the business side of fashion, you should consider becoming a member of Fashion Buzz.

This student run organization is the only one of its kind on the Savannah campus. Priding themselves in being able to pass on industry knowledge through opportunities for hands on experiences, our graduates are set apart from their competition.

With opportunities to style photo shoots, merchandise, work with local retailers and most importantly, build your portfolio, you should consider Fashion Buzz as the place to get this done.

President Nikki Delicana, a fourth year Fashion Marketing and Management student from Houston, Texas has been a member of Fashion Buzz since its creation three years ago, and has contributed many hours to the development of this organization.

She explained reasons for her continued membership stating, “I like to have hands-on experience; to help improve my styling, visual merchandising skills and so on.”

She went on to say, “It has helped me make great connections in Savannah, and has extended my social life.”

Similarly, vice president Cheryl Ho, a fourth year Fashion Marketing and Management student from Hong Kong views Fashion Buzz as an equally opportunistic experience, “there is hands on experience that we don’t cover in school, plus it looks good on your resume and in your portfolio.”

Local boutiques like Red Clover, Bleubell, Civvies and many more allow Fashion Buzz to be completely immersed in the fashion industry and gain a sneak peek of what sorts of projects you may be involved with in the future.

“We’re more than fashion. We also maintain strong relationships with those in the community, ” said Ho.

Although majority of the members are pursuing fashion marketing and management, this organization does not discriminate. If you have an interest in working with photographers, local retailers and prominent members of the community, this is a great opportunity.

Collaboration is an important part of this organization.

“In the past we have worked with Banana Republic to assist with styling for their fashion shows,” explained Nikki Delicana.

Having chosen to pursue a career in the creative field, a strong portfolio is a key component to your success. Use this as an opportunity to build and strengthen that portfolio.

Future projects include working with The Feminist Women’s Health Center Fashion Show in Atlanta to raise awareness of women’s rights.

Although Fashion Buzz does focus on the behind the scenes aspects of fashion, both Ho and Delicana advised, “don’t forget to be creative because there’s more to it than business.”

Knowledge of this organization is spread through word of mouth, Facebook and their blog, Ho said, “we are open to all majors, ages and sexes.”

If Fashion Buzz seems to be right up your alley, attend their bi-weekly Tuesday meetings at Eckberg Hall, room 206.
