The SCAD women’s swimming team won the NAIA National Championship Saturday in St. Peters, Mo.
This is the first-ever NAIA or NCAA title won in the programs history at SCAD. The Bees won with 691 points, 51.50 more than second place finisher California Baptist, who were the four-time defending champions.
Earning two other awards for SCAD, Stephanie McNicol was named the Women’s Outstanding Swimmer of the Year, and Wes Sinclair was named Women’s Coach of the Year.
The Bees also set college records as the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Stephanie McNicol, Abby Wilhelm, Lizzie Harr, and Cassie Dixon, came in second with a time of 3:30.13; Mary Ashley Krogh came in sixth place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.40 and Carly Keith came in fifth-place with a time of 2:09.33.
The SCAD men’s swimming team finished fourth while California Baptist won its fourth straight title. The Bees set college records as Mike Lawrence finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.25, teammates Nat Emmett and Thomas Gibson came in third and fourth with times of 2:02.1 8 and 2:03.06, respectively.
