Yoga Center stretches helping hand

The Savannah Yoga Center is offering “pay what you can” donation classes to help you balance your chakras and get your fair share of good karma.

The center will be donating the earnings to Liam’s Land, a local nonprofit dedicated to advancing research and identifying possible causes of lymphatic malformation.

“Janet and Joe Steffen, the founders of Liam’s Land, live in Savannah,” explained Kelley Boyd, owner of the Savannah Yoga Center. “Joe is a student here. We want to help them raise money for Liam’s Land and help bring awareness to this condition.”

The Steffen’s son, Liam, was born Jan. 5, 2010. After finding an unexpected mass on his neck, doctors diagnosed his condition as a lymphatic malformation, a condition which affects one in every 6,000 births. While the exact cause is unknown, doctors believe the lymphatic system does not connect properly during fetal development. The most common cases of lymphatic malformation affect the neck, tongue and mouth causing problems with eating, breathing and facial deformities.

“Any donation is welcome and everything is going directly to the organization,” said Boyd.

Classes are offered Monday through Friday, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., and are open to everyone from beginners to advanced yoga participants.

“The classes are being taught by students in our Teacher Training program who are about to graduate in May. This is part of their training, to get up in front of a class and teach, but they are also doing some good at the same time,” says Kat Jones, a yoga instructor at the center. “People get to experience different teachers and some different styles of flow yoga, which is basically moving, or flowing, with your breath. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Students are encouraged to arrive early to sign in. Mats and props are provided or available for sale in the center’s boutique. All you have to do is show up.

The Savannah Yoga Center is located at 1319 Bull St. For more information on yoga classes, visit savannahyoga.com, and for more information about Liam’s Land visit, liamsland.org.
