Last week District sat down with director of student involvement, Trey Reckling, to talk about why students should become more involved at the university in light of the beginning of a new quarter.
He stated that there are many reasons why students should feel the urge to become more involved.
“Student involvement gives a full experience,” Reckling said, “I would encourage a student to remember that they can, as a college student, come and kind of ‘let college happen to them.’ They can apply for classes, get their schedule, go to class and leave here with a degree and a fantastic education, and that’s all they do. That’s OK too. But rather than kind of letting college happen to them in that way, we hope that they’re looking for opportunities outside of the classroom.”
We discussed broadening a student’s scope of thought by becoming involved in clubs, professional organizations, even religious and spiritual groups.
He mentioned Latin dancing.
As an incredibly diversified selection of individuals, our university offers a wide variety of interesting and exciting experiences. These are readily available to anyone willing to take the time to seek them out.
He went on to state that opportunities like these “supplement the in-class education with speakers coming in and clubs for particular majors, allowing students to stitch together out and in-class learning.”
Keep in mind that once your time as a college student is over, these experiences can provide a leg up in a competitive job market.
“In talking to the employers that have come to SCAD, and speaking to our career and alumni success representatives, they support that this might not get you the job, but in such a competitive market, having one more thing on your resume shows that you’ve been civically minded, that you’ve been engaged in your community, all the while you’ve been working really hard in class… I think says a lot about an individual.”
Set a goal this quarter to reach out to other students, become involved in a club or organization and meet students from other majors. There is a possibility that you will never again find yourself surrounded by a population as diverse as our student body.
