5 Spots Around Sav Every Freshman Should Know

Welcome, readers, to my first issue this quarter of “Spots around Sav!” For those who aren’t familiar, this column is about every cool spot around Savannah. I write detailed articles about the spot’s history, atmosphere, and why you should check it out.
This inaugural issue highlights the top five spots SCAD freshmen should know at the start of school. I’ve focused on places that are close to the Hive and on blended spaces that will help you get away from the crowd as well as meet new people.
1. Jen Library
Jen Library is the go-to spot for printing, studying, and finding some peace away from a crowded dorm room. The library features workshops that showcase its vast special collections, as well as workshops on bookbinding, zines, and anything else you can think of. Jen Library is the best place to find old Vogue magazines, art books, or New Yorker issues.
It’s also next to Press Café, which has become a student hang-out/study space every freshman should know about. Not only because it’s close to the library, but because it has the listening lounge, Press Play. If you end up walking down Broughton to check out Press, make sure to get there early because the tables fill up fast.
2. Foxy Loxy
Foxy Loxy cafe is the perfect place to grab a bite in between classes, hang out with friends, or replenish your spirit with a coffee during your 10-minute break. This blend of coffee and Tex-Mex is situated a couple hundred feet away from Arnold Hall–where most freshmen will have at least one class this quarter.
It’s also the go-to first date spot at SCAD. It has the perfect ambience for coffee, tacos, and getting to know someone new. You’ll see everyone you’ve ever met at SCAD, so it’s the perfect place to meet new people. Stop in for a $2 matcha on Mondays or just to try their delicious chicken tacos.
3. Avalon
Fall quarter is the season of treating the hallways like a personal fashion show. There’s something about being away for the summer that unearths a perfect storm of one-of-a-kind outfits like nothing else. You too can stand out in the SCAD hallways; go to the staple thrift store for SCAD students, Avalon. You can bring clothes for cash or thrift outfits, jewelry, and basics. Avalon has everything you need to start the school year off feeling like your best self.
4. Forsyth Park
This large park is the center of Savannah, a gathering space for students and locals alike. It’s the perfect place to go to hang out with your friends or be alone in a crowd. It also holds events that you should tune in to in the fall, most notably the Savannah Farmers Market every Saturday morning, the Savannah Jazz Fest, and the annual Pride Fest, held this Sat., Oct. 24.
Forsyth Park offers a space to get outside while connecting with the community. If you ever feel lonely, Forsyth Park greets you like an old friend, reminding you of all the people you live with in this beautiful city.
5. Doki-Doki
Last but certainly not least, Doki-Doki is a place I wish I had known about during my first year at SCAD. Tucked into Wright Square, this ice cream shop boasts unique flavors, vegan options, and allergy-friendly gelato and ice cream. You can beat the lines of other ice cream shops and try flavors you’d never thought of before. It’s perfect for treating yourself and celebrating your first successful week at SCAD!
