Dust off those old moleskin notebooks and pick out your favorite pieces because on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., the Black Student Association (BSA) is hosting their quarterly “Night of Music & Poetry.”

Elev8ed, City Coffee and Ampersand all opened their doors at one time to house this event, but this quarter it finds a home at The Foundery Coffee Pub located at 1313 Habersham Street right across from, Anderson Hall.

According to Julian Rutledge,  the current BSA president and third-year 3D animation major from Dallas, Texas, The Foundery is a great space to help create an environment that promotes laughs, smiles, positive energy and self-love through art.

“Coffee and poetry go hand in hand,” said Rutledge.

Under the past president, Jamal Miller, “Night of Poetry & Music” became an event that the BSA was known for. The event is growing under Rutledge’s presidency. By next quarter, he hopes to include live illustrations and live music.

“We could have a whole Renaissance, artsy poetry night,” said Rutledge, who will be among Friday night’s performers. “That would be really cool.”

The BSA accepts 20 performers who can be students, staff, faculty or even people unaffiliated with SCAD. The limit is in place so that the event doesn’t run long, but is subject to change depending on the length of each performance.

“The only thing we ask is to have a positive say when you speak, because words have power,” said Rutledge. “[They] can either hurt you or empower you, and we want empowerment and encouragement of all kinds.”

If you wish to perform in the event, submit your work to bsa@scad.edu by Oct. 12 at 5 p.m.
