SCAD Studio promotes healthy living

The fresh food options at The Hive and the workout equipment at ClubSCAD aren’t SCAD’s only options for health conscious students.

SCAD Studio, the campus’ yoga and meditation center, offers Pilates, meditation, barre workout, yoga and dance. Yoga classes range from restorative — a gentle class aimed for all levels — to dynamic, which is more intense.

The studio is located at 600 E. Broughton Street and is also known as Corbin Hall. It is down the street from Jen Library and across from Norris Hall, both of which are accessible on the Silver and Purple routes.

“I think of it almost as a wellness center,” said Kathleen Pyrch, studio assistant coordinator at SCAD Studio.

SCAD Studio differs from other yoga and Pilates studios in the surrounding IMG_9869 (2)-2area.

“First of all, it’s free, which is a great perk,” said Pyrch. “This is an amazing university, but there’s a lot of pressure, so this is a place to come to de-stress and forget the problems and worries, and for an hour just take care of yourself.”

The front lobby opens up to a meditation room that is illuminated by the natural light shining through installations hanging in the windows. There is also studio room with exposed beams, wood floors and windows looking out over a garden with a swing and other seating that, according to Pyrch, students occasionally meditate on.

“It’s definitely a safe space. It’s like a sanctuary,” said Apple Xenos, a fourth-year advertising major from Miami, Florida. “I got into a huge car accident, and then I came to the studio and I just felt like everything was outside … and everything felt warm and peaceful.”

SCAD Studio strives to keep the classes small and intimate.

“We do have a limit of 15 students per class,” said Pyrch, “and our classes generally fill up.”

The best way to assure a spot in a class is to register on SCAD Studio’s Zen Planner an hour before the session starts.

Students who take classes at the studio recognize the importance of consistently scheduling time for them in their weekly routines.

“When I make the time to come here, I feel like I can handle everything else so much better, said Cecilia Li, a fourth-year motion media design major from Shaker Heights, Ohio. “You’ll have more mental clarity.”

SCAD Studio recently implemented what they call “student of the quarter.”

“We try to honor a student that has been here consistently and has made some serious progress. It’s nice to be recognized,” said Pyrch. “I always tell my students ‘take care of yourselves, and then you’ll be able to take care of everything else in your life.’”

SCAD Studio is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
