Coastal Bike Touring Club welcomes SCAD students along for the ride

The Coastal Bike Touring Club is a group of close to 150 cyclists who meet every Saturday to ride in the Savannah area. This group welcomes cyclists on road, touring, hybrid, recumbent and tandem bikes. Ranging from 25 to 40 miles, their bike routes explore a variety of landscapes and nearby towns, according to the club website.

On weekly rides and at meetings, the club creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and fosters learning opportunities. “Our monthly meetings give members the opportunity to hear speakers talk about everything from the early Savannah river to how to quickly change a flat tire,” said Mike Griffith, a member of the club.

The optional monthly meetings are great for those new to the sport and more experienced riders alike. On all rides, “There are [also] people with different riding skill levels, which necessitates having more than one group on any given ride,” said Debra Griffith, a CBTC member. These smaller groups vary in both speed and distance allowing everyone a productive and fun ride.

Both Debra and Mike Griffith agree that the best part of the club is the people. “The ride group is friendly and in short, enjoys being together,” said Debra. “It’s a great way to learn the sport, is good exercise and a good time with friends.”

The CBTC is always looking for new members and welcomes SCAD students to join any upcoming ride. Club membership is optional to participate. Riders must provide their own bike and wear a helmet. For more information and to find a ride calendar, visit CBTC.org.
