College Security Report: April 13-19, 2010

April 13

8:30 a.m.— Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Gordon Hall. The students were able to get out of the elevator prior to security’s arrival. Atlantic Coast Elevator was notified that the elevator was not working properly and needed to be serviced.

11:32 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security of a fire alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and the alarm was determined to be false. No alarm was indicated on the panel and the audible alarms had not activated. A work order was place to have Sonitrol check the system.

April 14

9:45 a.m.— At the request of the residence director, security responded to a room in Turner House for a drug policy violation. The Turner House resident assistant had conducted a safety inspection of the room and had discovered some drug paraphernalia. A SCAD student admitted that the item belonged to him. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene, confiscated the item and issued a report.

12:50 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at Dyson House involving a SCAD student and a SCAD worker. No injuries were reported and there was no visible damage to the SCAD van. Both parties declined police response.

8:32 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and it was determined that the alarm was false as there was no smoke or haze present. Sonitrol alarm company was notified and a work order was placed to have the system checked.

11:57 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Pepe Hall. Although the alarm panel was beeping, the panel indicated that all systems were normal. When security attempted to silence the panel, the panel went back into alarm. A patrol of the building was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was found. The panel was silenced and reset.

April 15

3:05 a.m.— Security discovered four SCAD students on the roof of Gulfstream Center. The students stated that they had ascended the ladder at Gulfstream to get to the roof to “just hang out.”

7:30 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had vandalized her car while it was parked in the Turner Annex parking lot. The student stated that she had parked the car at 10 p.m. April 14, and that she noticed the damage when she returned to the car the next morning. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

1:40 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call for a trip and fall at the Clarence Thomas Center. A guest at a meeting at the building had fallen on the front steps, injuring her face. The guest told the security officer at the building that she was OK and had departed the scene prior to a security supervisor arriving.

April 16

12:45 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that a group of four men had stolen her cell phone on East Hall Street. The student stated that the men asked to borrow her phone to make a call and that when she handed to phone to them they ran off with the phone. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police was notified but would not do a report on a stolen phone.

6 a.m.— The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police notified security that they had a witness who stated they had observed a man vandalizing Pei Ling Chan Gallery with graffiti. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police questioned the suspect and another man regarding the incident. The second man was allowed to depart the scene since the witness could not identify him as being near the gallery, but the police arrested the suspect. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a report.

1:55 p.m.— A SCAD parent contacted security regarding his son’s debit card being taken and used by his roommate at Turner House. The parent wanted to know what steps he needed to take to press charges against the roommate. The parent was told that his son would have to contact the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police to press charges.

April 17

9:05 a.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at Whitaker and Bay streets involving an Allied Barton Security vehicle and a non-SCAD vehicle. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and cited the non-SCAD driver. Very minor damage was reported on the Allied Barton vehicle.

2 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Gulfstream Center involving a SCAD student. The shop manager stated that the student had accidentally cut her arm with a shop knife while working on a project. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Candler Hospital.

8:35 p.m.— Security responded to a break in and vandalism complaint at a room in Pulaski House. Upon investigation it was determined that a SCAD student had mixed baby powder and water and had sprayed it around the room as a prank. The residence director stated that she would handle the incident.

April 18

1:40 a.m.— A SCAD student requested to speak with the on-call counselor. Security took all of the student’s information and passed along all the information to the counselor.

2:13 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Turner House. Security met two resident assistants on the scene who said that a SCAD student had been acting erratically and was believed to have taken a controlled substance, possibly acid, earlier in the night. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center. The residence director and on-call manager were notified of the incident. Two other SCAD students had admitted to EMS personnel that they had also taken some acid, but were not experiencing the same symptoms. EMS offered to transport those two students to the hospital as well, but the students declined.

9:42 a.m.— Security discovered the back door of Boundary Hall propped open and a pickup truck parked nearby. When security entered the lot to investigate, two people were observed quickly re-entering the building. Upon investigation it was determined that the individuals were a SCAD staff member and a student. The staff member stated that they were on site to pick up materials and had placed three to four bags of molding clay in the truck.

3 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security and a residence director that she has been being harassed by another SCAD student. The student stated that the other student has continued to contact her even though she has told him not to. The residence director stated that she would speak with the student accused of the harassment.

April 19

10:17 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Abercorn Terrace. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student taking a shower.

3:40 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had accidentally hit a Dumpster while backing up at Montgomery Hall. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

8:05 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

10 p.m.— Security received a complaint at Turner Annex from a SCAD student regarding a female student that he claims has been harassing him. Two residence directors were aware of the situation and stated that they would mediate the situation.
