Men’s Baseball
On April 16, the SCAD men’s baseball team defeated Southeastern University at Chain Field in Garden City.
Trailing the Fire 9-7 in the bottom of the tenth inning, the Bees’ Kelvin Goodson, a first-year architecture major from Hagan, Ga., hit a run-scoring two-out single with the bases loaded. Fourth-year href=”http://www.scadathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1798″>Scott Shambaugh, a photography major from Gahanna, Ohio, followed with a game-winning two-run single, propelling SCAD to a 10-9 victory over Southeastern University.
Nick Iuni, a first-year from Mahopac, N.Y., earned the win with three innings of relief for the Bees.
The following day SCAD and Southeastern University split a The Sun Conference baseball doubleheader at Chain Field.
The Bees won the opener 4-1. Mike Hines, a third-year broadcast design major from Lithonia, Ga., gave SCAD a 1-0 lead on a single in the first inning. The Bees added two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Second-year film and television major, Shane Yoder, from Gap, Ga., closed out the scoring with an RBI single.
SCAD starter Stephen Shackleford, a third-year visual communications major from Louisville, Ky., picked up his ninth win of the season.
In the second game, Southeastern won 8-6.
On Tuesday, April 20 the Bees stung Claflin University Panthers 14-4, banging out 16 hits in Orangeburg, S.C. Seven of SCAD’s 16 hits went for extra bases. Scott Shambaugh’s pinch-hit three-run homer highlighted a six-run fifth for the Bees.
Nick Iuni earned his seventh win of the season.
Women’s Softball
On April 16 the 15th-ranked lady Bees took sole possession of first place in The Sun Conference with a 4-1 win over Warner University at the Paulsen Softball Complex.
Fourth-year Carleigh Shannon, an architecture major from Jacksonville, Fla., led off with a bunt single. She stole a base and later came around to score on a wild pitch. In the fourth, junior Jackie Rooney, a graphic design major from Cowan Heights, Calif., added an RBI single.
SCAD starter and advertising design major Kristen Curette, a fourth-year from Baytown, Texas, improved to 8-0 allowing only three hits and striking out seven.
The following day Warner University swept a The Sun Conference softball doubleheader from the lady Bees.
In the opener SCAD committed two errors in the first inning allowing Warner to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Royals added two more in the third defeating SCAD 4-3.
In the nightcap the Royals took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth for a 4-1 win.
Tennis
On April 17, the third-ranked and top-seeded Embry-Riddle (Fla.) ended the Bee’s season with a 5-0 shut out at the 2010 The Sun Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts.
The following day Embry-Riddle downed No. 2 seed St. Thomas 5-1 in the title match.
No. 2 seed Northwood (Fla.) defeated the No. 3 lady Bees 5-3, April 17, ending their season at the 2010 The Sun Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts.
The top-seeded Embry-Riddle women’s tennis team captured the program’s first conference tournament title with a 5-0 defeat of No. 2 seed Northwood.
Equestrian
The SCAD equestrian team captured their sixth American National Riding Commission’s Intercollegiate Equitation Championship April 17-18 at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va.
The championship was divided into three phases – dressage sportif, hunter trials equitation and hunter seat. The dressage sportif portion counted 40 percent of the total score while the hunter trials equitation and hunter seat equitation counted 30 percent each. SCAD captured the team hunter seat equitation and hunter trials equitation phases and placed second in the dressage sportif category.
Second-year Kelse Bonham, an equestrian studies major from Eolia, Md., bested 39 other riders to defend her individual title that she won in 2009. It’s the fifth time a SCAD rider has won the individual title in the event.
As a team, the Bees swept all three phases to claim the 2010 title. It was the first time ever that SCAD has won the dressage sportif phase in the program’s history.
Golf
The women’s golf team finished in fourth place at the 2010 The Sun Conference Women’s Golf Tournament at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., April 20.
The fifth-ranked Bees shot a score of 305 to finish the 36-hole tournament at 626. No. 2-ranked Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University won the six-team field with a score of 596.
Andrea Perez, a first-year student from Quito, Ecuador, was one of three SCAD players named to the all-conference team as she finished in sixth place at 152 after a 75 while fourth-yearKatina Ruest, a graphic design major from Guatemala City, Guatemala, shot the low round of the day for the Bees with a 73 and finished in a tie for eighth place at 154.
Embry-Riddle earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship which will be held May 25-28 at the Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City, S.D. SCAD will find out May 13 if they have earned an at-large berth to the national championship.

The third-ranked Bees shot a 289 (+1) on their final trip to finish the 54-hole tournament at 865 (+1). League newcomer Johnson & Wales (Fla.) captured its first league title as they shot a 286 (-2) in the final round to win the tournament at 862 (-3). The Bees and Wildcats had shared the lead after the second round.
Tom Hayes, a third-year graphic design major from Cabberley, England, finished in a tie for fifth place for the Bees at 215 (-1) after an even par 72. Loren Bunting, a third-year graphic design major from Ocean Grove, Victoria, Australia, tied for ninth place at 218 (+2) after carding a 73 (+1). Mika Becktor, a fourth-year industrial design major from Dosjebro, Sweden, shot a 76 (+4) in the final round to finish in a tie for 11th place at 219 (+3).
Johnson & Wales earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship which will be held May 18-21 at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. The Bees will have to wait until May 6 to see if they have earned an at-large berth
