College Security Report: June 24-July 12, 2009
June 24
2:06 a.m.—SCAD Security received a call from the Eckburg Hall call box. When dispatch did not get a response, a security supervisor checked the area and the call box alarm was determined to be false.
5:15 p.m.—Security received a call from the Boundary Village officer in reference to a SCAD bus hitting the exit gate arm causing the arm to come off track. The driver did not stop after hitting the gate arm.
7:09 p.m.—Security received a call from Sonitrol in reference to multiple alarms on the side door on the Congress Street side of the Lucas Theatre. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officers responded as well. The building was checked and all was secured. The alarm was reset.
June 25
9:17 a.m.— Security received a call from Sonitrol in reference to a trouble alarm. The building was checked and the all clear was given.
12:34 p.m.— Security received a call in reference to a professor not showing up for work. SCAD Security and Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officers checked the professor’s residence and found no one there. It was later discovered that the professor was on vacation out of the country.
8:20 a.m.—Security found an alligator on the Equestrian Center property. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources was contacted and removed the animal without incident.
June 26
11:15 a.m.—Sonitrol notified security of a trouble alarm at Alexander Hall. Security responded to the scene and was not able to find any problem. Sonitrol was informed and stated that they would dispatch a technician.
1:33 p.m.—Security received a call box activation alarm at Arnold Hall. Upon investigation it was determined to be a false alarm.
2:10 p.m.—A SCAD student notified security that as she was walking her dog past Pulaski House, a construction worker inside the house started to bang on the windows and was yelling to get her attention. When she passed the building to return home, the same man —along with another man—started banging on the windows again.
June 28
10:13 p.m.—A resident assistant informed security that there were naked, intoxicated students in the pool at Dyson House. Security responded to the scene and discovered two students in the pool area. A third student had fled the scene. Both students at the scene appeared to be intoxicated and were uncooperative until resident assistants spoke with them.
June 30
12:20 p.m.—Security responded to a crash involving an American Coach Line bus and a non-SCAD vehicle at Broughton and Price streets. The bus driver stated that she was driving west on Broughton Street when she accidentally struck a parked burgundy Chrysler LHS, damaging the driver’s side mirror. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
2:20 p.m.—Security responded to a vehicle crash at Alexander Hall involving a SCAD student and a parked car belonging to another student. Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
July 1
9:09 a.m.—Sonitrol notified dispatch of a smoke detector alarm at Pulaski House. Security responded to the scene and determined that the alarm was caused by housekeeping staff dusting in the area of the detector. The Savannah Fire Department responded to the scene and instructed security to silence and reset the alarm.
3:30 p.m.—Security responded to a pull station alarm activation at Crites Hall. Upon investigation it was determined that someone had pulled a pull station in the basement. Savannah Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and conducted a patrol of the area. No problems were found and the system was silenced and reset.
5 p.m.—A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen her bicycle from the bike rack at Barnard Village. She stated that she had locked the bike to the rack earlier in the afternoon and that the bike was gone when she returned at 5 p.m. Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
7:35 p.m.— Sonitrol reported to dispatch that there was a pull station alarm activation at Lai Wa Hall. Security responded to the scene and the alarm panel indicated that during a self-test there was an error with the pull station. The alarm was silenced and Sonitrol dispatched a technician.
July 2
7:30 p.m.—Security responded to a small fire at the 49th Street parking lot. The Savannah Fire Department was notified and responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. Upon investigation it appeared that someone had thrown a bottle filled with gasoline into the lot. Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
11:07 p.m.—Security received a call from a parent of a Rising Star student stating that he had not heard from his daughter all day and was concerned. Security responded to Dyson House, contacted the student and requested that she call her father.
July 3
3:39 a.m.—Security observed a suspicious man near Turner House. The operations manager responded to the area and conducted a foot patrol of the Turner House. No individual was found, but several of the first floor windows were found unsecured. The windows were secured.
10:30 p.m.— Security found the Abercorn Street side door to the Granite Steps was unsecured. A patrol of the area was conducted and the downstairs apartment door was also found to be unsecured. No one was present in the building. Patrol secured both doors.
July 4
3 p.m.—Security responded to a call box activation at Bergen Hall. A patrol was dispatched, but no one was found in the area of the call box.
July 6
1:30 a.m.—Security observed a white male (5 foot 9 inches, black and white shirt, black jeans and a black cap) in the vicinity of JO’s patio. The operations manager responded to the site and the individual jumped a wall and ran toward the Civic Center parking lot. A patrol of the area was conducted and nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary. Police were notified of the incident and given a description of the individual.
July 7
Security responded to a vehicle crash at Gulfstream. A non-SCAD individual struck a light pole and some trees and bushes at the Gulfstream property. Police, emergency medical services and Savannah Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. The police issued a report.
6:30 p.m.—A SCAD student reported to security that he had lost his passport sometime between July 3 and July 7. He said he would also file a police report in case the passport gets turned in to the police.
July 8
7:12 p.m.—Security responded to Weston House to take a vandalism report. A door had graffiti vandalism and another had a cracked window and damage to the door. Police responded to the scene and issued a report. The resident director indicated that there has been an ongoing issue with the students in these rooms. The resident director confiscated two swords belonging to one of the students.
10:49 p.m.— Security discovered the front door of Harris Hall was unsecured. Security dead bolted the door and placed a work order for repair.
July 9
7:47 a.m.—Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Turner House. Upon security’s arrival the elevator technician had already been able to release occupants from of the elevator.
9:55 a.m.—Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Ex Libris. Upon security’s arrival the elevator technician had already been able to release occupants from the elevator. The malfunction was caused by a power outage in the area.
10 p.m.—Security discovered the side door of Café SCAD was unsecured. A work order for repair was placed.
July 10
10:30 a.m.—A security officer observed a black male jumping into the SCAD dumpster at Abercorn Commons. Police arrived on scene immediately after and asked the security officer if she had seen anyone matching the description of the male in the area. She informed police that she thought the unidentified male had jumped into the dumpster. An initial search of the dumpster produced no results, but the officer asked police to check the dumpster again since she was sure that the man entered the dumpster. Police found the suspect during the second search of the dumpster and placed him under arrest.
4:22 p.m.—Security received a report that a student had injured her finger at Fahm Hall. The Summer Seminar director was notified and the student was transported to Urgent Care.
4:22 p.m.—Security responded to an off campus vehicle crash involving an American Coach Line driver and a non-SCAD vehicle. The bus driver said she had accidentally sideswiped a parked vehicle. Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
July 11
2:02 p.m.—Security attempted to stop a SCAD student from entering Eichberg Hall with an invalid ID. The student refused to stop at the security desk and said he just needed to get something. The operations manager responded to the scene located the student in the building and asked him to leave. The student left without further incident.
July 12
9:36 a.m.— Security discovered the front door of the Student Center was unsecured. A patrol was conducted of the building and then the door was secured.
3:17 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Boundary Village. Security patrolled the area, but did not find anyone in the vicinity of the call box.
