College Security Report: May 13-19, 2009
May 13
6:53 a.m.— SCAD security received a call from a parent in reference to her son, a SCAD student. She stated that she had not heard from her son in couple of days and was concerned. Security contacted a resident assistant at Dyson House. The resident assistant stated she needed to wait an hour because she did not want to disturb the student’s roommate. A SCAD security officer was sent to the student’s room and asked him to contact his mother.
9:30 a.m.— SCAD security received a call from Sonitrol alarm company in reference to a trouble alarm at Barnard Village. Security responded and found a SCAD student asleep in the room. There were no signs of smoke. The alarm could not be reset and security dispatch contacted Sonitrol to have them send a tech to re-set the panel.
12:48 p.m.— SCAD security received a call that there was smoke coming from the ceiling in the Dyson House computer lab. Security arrived on scene and confirmed that the lab was filled with smoke. The Savannah Fire Department was called and arrived on scene. The fire department conducted an inspection but could not locate a fire. The lab was cleared and students were allowed back into the lab.
11:20 p.m.— SCAD security at Eichberg Hall received a report from a SCAD student that her black box containing a full set of markers, electrical sharpener and a ruler was stolen. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were notified, however she found that her friend took possession of the missing items and that she no longer needed security or the police.
May 14
12:42 a.m.— Dispatch received a call from a SCAD parent regarding an altercation between another SCAD parent and her daughter occurring at Dyson House. She stated that she was fearful of her daughter’s safety because another parent was being verbally abusive to her daughter. An operations manager reported to the scene and spoke with the SCAD students. A resident assistant and residence director also responded to the scene. The parent stated that he was at the dorm moving his daughter out. All parties denied that there had been any confrontation. The residence director stated that he would stay on scene until the move out had been completed.
10 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Bergen Hall. A SCAD student was having trouble remaining conscious and stated that she had a seizure three days ago. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center.
1:43 p.m.— A residence director reported to security that there was marijuana present in a room at Oglethorpe House. The items were removed from the room and were taken to the Residence Life office. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were notified and responded to the scene to remove the marijuana and one pipe from SCAD property. No arrests were made.
9:09 p.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police called dispatch requesting assistance with a student that had been found walking while intoxicated on 34th and Whitaker streets. An operations manager and security responded to the scene. The woman, who claimed that she was a student and a resident of Turner House, had run and had attempted to hide when she was confronted by the police. The woman stated that she had been drinking and had lost her purse and her ID. She also stated that she was attempting to walk back to Turner House, but the police stated that she had been walking in the opposite direction when they attempted to stop her. While the woman was speaking to police, two individuals claiming to be her friends walked by and the police allowed her to leave with her friends.
May 15
1:37 a.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Old Arch. A foot patrol was conducted and no one was found to be in the area.
10 a.m.— Security responded to medical call at Arnold Hall. A SCAD student stated that she had fallen while walking into the main entrance and had injured her right arm. EMS responded to the scene and instructed the student to go to the SCAD clinic if the arm continued to cause her pain.
5:13 p.m.— Security responded to vehicle accident at the lot next to Turner House involving a SCAD and an intern student. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
5:59 p.m.— A SCAD student at Turner House reported to security that he had a new lead in reference to his laptop that was stolen last month. He also stated that he felt that his safety might be in danger from other students because of information that he gave to the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police. The police responded to the scene and added the information to previously filed report. The residence director responded to the scene and also spoke with the student.
9:26 p.m.— Security discovered smoke coming from the Dumpster at Boundary Village. The Savannah Fire Department was notified and responded to the scene. It was determined that the smoke was being caused by hot charcoal having been thrown into the Dumpster. The fire department extinguished the hot coals.
10:15 p.m.— Security received a call from a SCAD student requesting to speak with an on-call counselor. Dispatch called and gave the counselor the student’s information.
May 16
2:12 a.m.— Security responded to a smoke alarm activation at a room in Oglethorpe House. Security determined the alarm was false, and the system was silenced and reset.
3 a.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Bergen Hall. A foot patrol was conducted and no one was found to be in the area.
1:22 p.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm at Clinard Hall. A complete foot patrol of the premises was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered.
6:11 p.m.— Security responded to student altercation at Turner Annex. A SCAD student reported that another SCAD student had kicked the gas tank of her vehicle and that she wanted police response. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene, but she decided not to file charges against him. The resident assistant and residence director were notified of the situation and stated that the Residence Life Office would handle the situation.
10:12 p.m.—Security discovered a smoldering fire in the trash receptacle outside of the Jen Library. The Savannah Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
May 17
4 a.m.— The Turner Booth Security Officer heard what sounded like multiple fireworks being detonated on site at Turner House. A foot patrol was conducted of the Turner House area, but nothing unusual was discovered.
10:05 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company reported to security that there had been a distress alarm activated at Hamilton Hall. A foot patrol was conducted and it was determined that Hamilton Hall was unoccupied.
11:30 a.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm activation at Turner Annex. Security determined that the alarm was false.
4 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from the bike rack in her backyard at her off-campus home. She stated that she had last seen the bike at 9 a.m. May 16, and that she discovered the bike to be missing at 10 a.m. May 17. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
7:22 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that she had responded to a help wanted ad on Craigslist on May 10. She stated that, during the off-campus interview, the non-SCAD individual verbally harassed her in a sexual manner. A report was filed with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police on May 14.
May 18
1:50 p.m.— SCAD students at Turner House reported to security that they had not seen or heard from their friend, another SCAD student, since early morning on May 16. Security went to the student’s dorm, but no one was on site. The residence director was informed of the situation.
11:25 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at two rooms in Barnard Village. The alarms were determined to be false and the system was silenced and reset.
11:25 p.m.— Security noticed a white Buick in the overflow parking lot of Oglethorpe House. Two individuals were in the vehicle and a man was walking around in the parking lot. Security called Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police to check the area. The vehicle departed when police arrived on site.
May 19
9:30 a.m.— A SCAD student notified security that one of her tires had been slashed while her car was parked at Ex Libris. She stated that she parked the vehicle in the lot at 9 a.m. and that she noticed the damage when she returned at 9:30 a.m. The student did not want the police notified.
4:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from the bike rack at Oglethorpe House on May 11. She did not wish to file a police report.
7:18 p.m.— Security was notified of an alarm activation at Evans Hall. Security performed a foot patrol of the building and determined that the alarm was false.
