College Security Report: Sept. 21-27, 2009

Sept. 21

9:16 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Wallin Hall involving a SCAD student. He had fallen backwards at his desk and had hit his head on the floor. EMS responded to the scene and evaluated the student. The student refused transport and returned to class.

11:53 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Anderson Hall involving a SCAD student. Witnesses stated that she had suffered a seizure. She was alert and stated that she frequently has seizures and that she did not need EMS response.

5:40 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Gulfstream Center involving a SCAD student. He had passed out while in class. EMS responded to the scene and, after evaluating the student’s condition, allowed him to return to class.

5:57 p.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.

8:41 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from Arnold Hall. She stated that she had last seen the bike locked to the bike rack at 7:25 p.m. and that the bike was missing when she returned at 8:30 p.m. the same day. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. The bike was not registered with SCAD security and the only description the student could provide was that the bike was red.

Sept. 22

12:29 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.

2:20 p.m.— Security responded to a pull station activation with evacuation at the Student Center. Security determined that an ABM janitorial services employee had accidentally hit the pull station. The alarm was silenced and reset.

4 p.m.— Security stopped an individual from entering the Jen Library with a SCAD ID that did not belong to him. Security confiscated the ID and turned it in to Turner Express. The unknown individual refused to identify himself and left property.

4:55 p.m.— A SCAD student called dispatch and complained that the security officer at Arnold Hall would not let him in the building. He stated that he had forgotten his ID, but felt that the officer should have let him in the building anyway. He was informed that he would need a current sticker and current ID to enter the building.

5 p.m.— The manager of Sun Coast Wireless reported to security that a laptop was left in his store on Sept. 21 and that he believed that the laptop belonged to SCAD. Security took the laptop to Propes Hall and it was confirmed that the laptop belonged to Jason Zimmer, Anderson Hall Foundation.

Sept. 23

12:13 a.m.— An ABM janitorial services employee reported to security that she had been vacuuming a room in Adler Hall when she had discovered a computer, monitor, mouse and keyboard on the floor. The computer was still padlocked, but there was broken glass in the area of the CPU.

9:20 a.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police notified security that they had recovered a purse from behind the Dumpster at Clary’s Cafe at Habersham and 61st streets, and that they believed that the purse belonged to a SCAD student. The student was contacted and stated that she would get the purse from the police. The police issued a report.

2:45 p.m.— Security was notified of an off-campus vehicle accident at Gaston and Whitaker streets involving a SCAD student and a vehicle driven by a non-SCAD individual. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. The student stated that he would probably drive himself to the hospital to get himself checked out.

7:44 p.m.— Security was notified that there was an alarm coming from the rear fire door at Turner Annex. Security responded and secured the open door and silenced the alarm.

Sept. 24

12:50 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Boundary Hall. A SCAD student stated that she was having an anxiety attack that may have been caused by changes in her anxiety medication. EMS responded to the scene and evaluated the student. She stated that she did not need further EMS attention and that she was feeling well enough to leave the building and go home and rest. She departed the scene with her boyfriend.

5:30 p.m.— A SCAD student called dispatch and stated that someone had damaged his windshield while his car was parked at Montgomery Hall. The student was asking if the college would reimburse him for the damage. Security offered to call the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and to also have a security officer respond to Montgomery Hall, but the student stated that he was already at his off-campus residence and that he had waited to call security until he got home. Security offered to take a report over the phone and also suggested that he contact the police to file a report. He stated that he would call the police and would contact security with the incident report number.

Sept. 25

12:45 p.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm activation for the third floor duct detector at Gordon Hall. Security met with the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and it was determined that the alarm was caused by contractors working on drywall. The alarm was silenced and reset.

8:30 p.m.— Security responded to complaint from a SCAD student at Dyson House. She stated that when she entered her dorm this evening her dorm smelled of marijuana and that her roommate and a guest appeared to be agitated and paranoid. A residence director responded to the scene and a pipe smelling of marijuana was discovered in the room. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and, after confirming that the pipe smelled of marijuana, took the pipe and stated that it would be destroyed.

11:30 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Dyson House involving a SCAD student. A residence director stated that she believed that the student was intoxicated. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and EMS responded to the scene and it was determined that the student would be allowed to go to fellow student’s room to “sleep it off.” At 12:05 a.m., the residence director called again and asked for EMS response. EMS responded to the scene and the student again refused EMS treatment. A taxi was called and the student returned to his residence.

Sept. 26

incident occurred at 1 a.m., reported at 1:13 p.m.— At 1:13 p.m. Sept. 26, the parent of a SCAD student notified security that her daughter had been carjacked at an off-campus location (Price and Nichols streets) at 1 a.m. the same day. The parent stated that her daughter had been struck in the head with a gun and that her car and belongings were taken. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police had already been notified and had issued a report.

2:45 a.m.— Security discovered the kitchen door to the SCAD Café was unsecured. Security conducted a foot patrol of the building and then secured the door.

7:31 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Arnold Hall. Security responded to the scene and determined that the alarm was false.

11:36 p.m.— Security responded to medical call at Turner House involving a SCAD student. Upon arrival at the scene, security met with a residence director who stated that the student was unconscious and that she believed that the student was either intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. EMS responded to the scene and the student was transported to Memorial University Medical Center.

Sept. 27

2:25 a.m.— A resident assistant requested security assistance to a room in Barnard Village. The resident assistant stated that he had heard noises in the room and knocked on the door, but was not let in the room. Upon security’s arrival it was discovered that the students had alcohol on campus. A resident director was notified, but was at hospital handling a previous incident.

10:30 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his bike had been stolen from his off-campus residence on East Bolton Street. He stated that the bike was not locked when it was stolen, but that it was registered with SCAD security. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

11:21 a.m.— Security responded to a pull station trouble alarm at Oglethorpe House. Security discovered that the pull station inside the first floor dining room had been damaged. The alarm was silenced and reset. Sonitrol alarm company was notified of the damage to the pull station and a work order was placed to have the unit repaired.

5:10 p.m.— A SCAD student notified security that, while she was at an abandoned building at an unknown location taking pictures, she had stepped on a nail and punctured her right foot. She stated that she did not want EMS response and that her mother had stated that she had recently had a tetanus shot. A residence director was made aware of the situation.
