Don’t Stress! Music gets you moving

By Kelsey Norden

When it comes to getting work done, music can be both a helper and a hindrance. On one hand, it serves as great background music to keep the energy flowing as you get your work done. On the other, it can be a major distraction. Even as I type this article, I have Pandora running my Shiny Toy Guns station, and I’m finding it hard to concentrate, but don’t want to lose the background noise. Work comes first, though, so pause button it is.

Music can be a great tool in relieving stress in a handful of ways. If you’re feeling down and out, listen to something upbeat. If you just need to chill out and be at peace, listen to some trance or ambient music. If you’re just angry and you need to release some steam, blast some metal.

Music can have a range of effects on people, as it is meant to push and pull at our emotions. Be careful of what music you select to help relieve your stress, and don’t spend too much time listening to it when you need to get work done. It’s good to take a break to listen and sing along to your favorite songs in order to loosen up, but it’s also good to maintain focus.

However, on the topic of loosening up, get up and dance. Sometime you just need to turn up some dancing music, shut the door and groove all around your room. No one’s watching, so what do you have to be scared of? It could be just the sort of release you need.

When it’s time to get back to work, turn the music down to a low volume and play something that won’t keep you from focusing. Personally, I find video game soundtracks great to work to. Many have beautiful background music, so pick your favorite game and give its soundtrack a listen.

On a final note, be wary that we are getting knee deep into finals, and people are trying to work around you. Be mindful of your neighbors. Wear headphones and keep the noise down so you don’t disrupt anyone else. Just because music works for one person, doesn’t mean it works for another.
