Fresh Advice: Savannah’s best coffee
By Sarah Kefalas
From a sophomore student looking back at her freshman year at SCAD comes Fresh Advice, the run down on all of the SCAD programs, operations and secret tricks you need to know to make a smooth transition to SCAD life.
Starting my day would not be the same if I didn’t have my cup of coffee. Coffee comes in all different forms, from the basic black to the non-fat soy latte. However you take it, most college kids need coffee, but that isn’t really groundbreaking news. Yes, we do have two Starbucks, but I want to highlight the local shops that can make your iced vanilla latte with almond milk (my drink of choice) even better than the big name brands.
The Perfect Study Spot – Gallery Espresso
Located at 234 Bull Street
Head on into Gallery Espresso, a true bohemian coffee house. I recommend having one of their frozen lattes, the perfect thing to cool you down in the Savannah heat. If you’re feeling hungry you can also order off their food menu, ranging from bagels to a B.L.T. And, of course, proceed to sit on one of the many comfy chairs awaiting you. This is the perfect coffee shop if you need a quiet, low-key place to do homework or do some last minute studying for that art history exam. Getting wi-fi at Gallery is a simple task, just look for the sign on the counter. Now, besides being this amazing coffee shop and homework spot, Gallery Espresso is in fact a gallery, displaying art work all over its walls.
I strongly encourage that you go check out this cozy coffee shop next time you need to study, or just be away from your roommate.
Exotic Coffee – Blends
Located at 102 East Broughton StreetIf you are tired of your boring old blend and want to mix it up, head on over to Blends, where you have a choice of coffee blends with origins in Guatemala, Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Ethiopia and Sumatra. Located on Savannah’s growing Broughton Street hub, Blends is a perfect place to go to when you’ve finished your work inside SCAD’s Jen Library right down the street, or if you are shopping at the many stores located on Broughton. The baristas at Blends always ask what type of blend and milk you want, which, since I am pretty picky, is one of my favorite things about the service.
Also, be sure to pull out that SCAD ID while you’re checking out to get Blends’ student discount, because they get the need for college students to have their coffee.
Much More Than a Coffee Shop – Foxy Loxy
Located at 1919 Bull Street
Foxy Loxy is more than your average coffee shop, much more. Besides serving amazing drinks (HORCHATA LATTE, guys), Foxy also serves baked goods and Tex-Mex cuisine. On Tuesday nights, you can get a glass of wine while listening to live music and they light a bonfire in the courtyard. Foxy Loxy really has something for everyone, whether it be a quiet place to sip your wine, or one of the best vegan brownies you’ve ever had. Next time you need a coffee pick me up, head on over to Foxy Loxy cafe and get your urban hipster on.
These are three of my favorite coffee shops, but there are so many great places in Savannah to grab a cup of joe. Here are a few others:
- Mirabelle Suites & Cafe (has amazing gourmet waffles)
- Savannah Coffee Roasters
- Cup to Cup Cafe
- The Coffee Fox (in the same family as Foxy Loxy)
And I’m sure there are others I have yet to discover! I hope this helps narrow down your coffee search; starting the school year off can be stressful enough without having to worry where you’ll buy your much needed blend. Go forth with this knowledge and have a wonderful school year.
